Ohtani is roughly a 6 WAR hitter and a 4 WAR pitcher. At 8M per 1 WAR, that is 80M per contract. Ohtani is only 28 years old now, so a 10 year contract is a real possibility. A 800M contract is insane to think about.

If Ohtani was only a pitcher, he would be looking at a Gerrit Cole type of contract. 10 year 350-400M contract.

If Ohtani was a DH hitter only, maybe he takes a haircut and only gets 25-30M per year.

This math lowers the 10 year contract to 600-700M. A real bargain ;)

I think the risk is that he'll be 30 when he's a free agent, so a 10/500 deal signs him until he's 40. Will he still be hitting AND pitching in the latter part of his career? If not, you could be paying a lot for just a hitter or just a pitcher. The other risk is injury - you just need 1 injury to take him out vs two $25MM/yr independent players who'd both need to be injured to have the same impact.

Still could be a good deal and a steal if he's outstanding for the first part of the contract, but it does entail more risk than usual.

Regardless, the dude looks like he knows what he is doing at the plate, and yes that was some kind of filthy.

You are supposed to look at the pitches and discern for yourself if it looks filthy

Pretty sure any major or minor league pitcher could throw 4 pitches that look filthy when facing a random dude off the street.

27th round pick, played 6 seasons in the minors, now is apparently siphoning money from rich suburban parents who are trying to live out their dreams via their children...he's an instructor at a Baseball USA somewhere

Houston Sports Awards is about to start on ABC13. Bregman was the host and I'm sure the Astros picked up most of the awards.

My bad, put them in the "one" category, for 21 years ago.

    Good catch.

Craig Biggio’s career war is 65 or 66. I will throat punch anyone in my general vicinity who says he’s not a HOF guy.

I meant 600 as in “gets stupid”. The biggest contract in baseball history is what- 450. Going 33% higher seems crazy. I am about as pro big contracts for stars as anyone out there but that one I just couldn’t wrap my mind around agreeing to. I wonder if that thing would even be insurable?
