If Jalen Green had 2017 Harden’s shot selection, he’d be way more efficient.

I did the math. If Green simply took shots where Harden did, and shot the exact same percentages as he is this season from different distances on the floor, he would increase his TS% from 53.5% to nearly 57%. That’s a change he can make right now.
That’s a huge difference simply by selecting more efficient shots.

And if, in the off-season, he worked on improving his 3-ball from 33% to a very do-able 36%, his TS% would improve to nearly 60%, putting him up there with the elites of the league.

He has the talent and the ability.. he just needs to become a smarter, more efficient player.. and a lot of it has to do with coaching him to get better shots.

Ow wow, never thought I’d see something this nonsensical after witnessing Harden ignoring a part of his game that would’ve likely guaranteed our victory against the Warriors if he hadn’t.

The Warriors are one of the greatest dynasties of all-time and Harden was an MVP and one of the greatest scorers of all-time, and that’s your take?

Harden shooting mid rangers would GUARANTEE victory against what was by far the best team in nba history?

This is an interesting analysis. I do agree I want Green shooting some more threes, but not to eliminate the midrange entirely. Should still be mixing in a a couple a game, but more if he can't get good looks from 3 or at the rim.

Follow this simple mantra. Take what the defense gives you.

Modern NBA defenses are horrible at defending the mid range but players at the same time aren't practicing them enough to be competent at them.

    Jalen second year
    Harden 8th year in 2017

Also, they don't play Morey ball anymore

I reject the premise of that mantra. The smart mantra is when you work to become an efficient machine on offense, you make the defense react to what you’re doing. You don’t simply take what they’re giving you. They’re giving it to you for a reason. You dictate the terms.. not their defense.

And then in the playoffs, teams have days to scheme for the same team and completely neutralize the paint and 3 pt line.

The Rockets went toe to toe with one of the greatest teams of all time. They were never neutralized.

Secondly, the playoffs are a chess game. I’m not saying to become completely predictable. But simply playing into what the defense is giving you is losing basketball.

I don't think they're "horrible" at it, I think they're giving it up on purpose because 95%+ of NBA players are extremely inefficient at midrange shots, even wide open ones. The defenses are welcoming it.

Yes and it's a self fulfilling prophecy because they simply don't practice then enough.

Jalen takes a few tough 3s off dribble that could be eliminated , but he must continue to keep his baseline / free throw line jumper…and add a floater to it.

As he gets stronger he will finish around the rim better

The great Kobe Bryant only shot about 40% from 10 ft to the 3-pt line. Did he not practice enough?

Look, it’s just not an efficient shot. Like 95% of players shoot the same percentages on jumpers inside the arc that they shoot from behind the arc. And inside the arc they earn 50% less points than the same percentage shot outside of it. But having it in the bag could be helpful sometimes to give the defense a different look.

As for Jalen Green, although he could be more efficient by taking a similar approach to Harden, that isn’t the only way to improve his efficiency. He needs to get to the line more. He’s only averaging 5.5 free throw attempts per game. If he can be more aggressive inside and get to the line about 8.5 times a game, he would average a TS% of 56%, which is respectable.

    -Getting to the line more
    -Better shot selection
    -Improve from 3 a bit

A combination of those 3 things would drastically improve his efficiency.

Shooting percentages matter when you can get a clean shot off.

Here is the truth about excessive 3 pt shooting and relying heavily on it. It becomes more difficult to shoot efficiently as the season and playoffs progress as legs get more tired. Defenses also pack the paint. Ive seen playoff games and entire series lost because players literally refused to take wide open mid range shots and turned the ball over trying to force the issue.

I do not see how u came to the conclusion that modern nba defense are bad at defending mid range since no one is taking those types of shots as much.

I do believe that if u can guard the perimeter competently, u can guard folks taking mid range.

I do also believe that if u are competent at shooting mid range, u should take that shot to keep the defense guessing.

    Harden’s shot selection?

    Are you seriously?

Harden is not great for his shot selection.
Its his playmaking and great shooting.

It would help if the zebras would use their whistle. He draws a ton of contact and they just look the other way.
