Pretty much spot on. I think that Lee still has time. The Astros really have no other options in the system. Signing Contreras gives him another year and reduces the pressure on him. I feel like he has it in him and was encouraged by his finish last year. Sign Contreras and move Lee up and down to maximize his learning and balance playing time. Do the Carlos Santana thing and take away Diaz's catcher mitt. If he refuses to play the position or even perform acceptably when put there then he has no future. He could be the 1B/DH of the future but is young and inexperienced enough to keep in AAA all year. Maybe that will get him thinking about his choice. Resign Brantley and let Jake and Leon battle for CF. 1 starts in Houston and one in Sugarland. LF: Yordan 70%, Brantley 25%, Chas 5% CF: Meyers/Leon 65%, Chas 35% RF: Tucker 95%, Chas 5% DH: Contreras 45%, Yordan 25%, Brantley 30%. C: Maldy 50%, Contreras 50% Enjoy the ride with Tucker. 3 more years and then he goes the way of Springer and Correa. Gotta keep offering an extension but don't expect anything.
Basically. Springer and Verlander are the only two who left that would even be considered. I don’t think at the end of the day either did enough to warrant jersey retirement.
If Diaz doesn't want to be a catcher then groom him for another spot. There are some other catching prospects that will be ready to move up to AAA. I only include him in the discussion because they still list him as a catcher. Lee to me is the current Maldonado replacement. Unless they truly want Wilson Contreras to catch more games in the upcoming years. And I don't think he's going to sign with us because I believe he'll get offered more money elsewhere. If he wants to catch he'll catch any other team other needing a catcher. But if he comes here he's split in time. But maybe he wants to only catch part-time if so wonderful I'm sure we can use him as a DH for about half the season or more. Then Lee can get the time he needs at the majors to determine whether or not he can actually be worth a crap next year. If he's not we need to move on.
