I don’t really follow soccer / Futbol but I do pay attention to the World Cup. The same with most sports in the Olympics but I’ll get into track and field, downhill skiing, and other Olympic sports when they come around. Also the Olympics are the pinnacle of my sport so follow that. For grand international competition what do you like more?
For soccer, it's WC no question...just like baseball and the WS. All other sports are pretty much Olympics first. Related question: how does qualifying for the Olympics work in soccer?
It's a similar qualification system but oddly the Olympic soccer tournament is an exclusive U23 tournament with the exception of 3 overage players that you could take with you. I do think qualification spots are more limited than for the actual WC. A youth tournament if you will. All 6 continental associations hold U21 youth cups to determine qualifiers. (This only applies to Men futball as Women can field a team whatever age they want.)
Aw, hell, I thought the Oly's used the actual national teams. Nevermind. I would absolutely kill for an "All-Americas" tournament instead of constantly playing the Centrals and Caribbeans.
olympics are cool if you win it but nowhere near the importance of the world cup or most regional trophies you would rather win the olympics than the gold cup but not over copa america or the euros Mexico has a gold and a bronze btw
The Olympics are neat but there's just so much I don't give a s*** about. "Sports" that involve ribbons and speed walking don't quite do it for me on a day to day basis like the World Cup does. I'm a futbol guy, though, since the age of 4 and still playing today (tonight, in fact) well into my late 40's. I pretty much watch the major sports in the Olympics and, naturally, the soccer portion is of the greatest interest to me. I just don't give a crap about skateboarding or some of these events where I wonder how a person even figured out they're good at it. How the f*** is breakdancing an Olympic event in 2024? Where do people still breakdance?!
This depends what sport. There is a world championship of Judo and world championship of wrestling, track and field, etc. None of those compare to winning a medal at the Olympics
I personally wish soccer and tennis would be removed from the Olympics. If the Olympics aren’t the highest point of the sport then I think they shouldn’t be in. There are too many sports already.
while olympic soccer is not the peak of the sports, it is still a pretty prestigious tournament and has a lot of historic importance to the game. pre fifa, it was the top international competition and yes some teams take it very seriously. it was the last piece of silverware the brazil team was missing and believe me they very much cared when they finally won it in 2016. uruguay claims the 1924 and 1928 as world championships having equal weight to their 1930 and 1950 world cup wins. fifa has done everything it can to limit its importance, but it still has a place in the football calendar
Its also important to consider that its one of the few sports where a developing nation can win. so much of the olympics is just about how much gov funding a sports gets but soccer is different. that 96 nigerian team winning gold mattered
