I think it's safe to say: the player Pena replaced could not have done better this postseason run. Congratulations Pena to a remarkable rookie season.

He is under club control for 5 more seasons and basically making the minimum for the next 2 seasons.

 

It's the mercenary aspect that rubs many people the wrong way.

Wanting a long term contract after being systematically underpaid for years isn’t exactly mercenary in my book.

Now whether being paid millions is considered underpaid or not after investing millions in development make one underpaid is a matter of perspective.

 

Peña’s quote after winning mvp showed truly amazing character and maturity for a guy his age. Almost as impressed by that as I have been his play on the field.

 

Players under team control are underpaid relative to their value even if some of them make a lot of money through arbitration. If that wasn’t the case, owners wouldn’t be fighting so hard to keep players under team control.

 

Maybe some folks will finally shut up about what a mistake it was to let Correa go.

Pena did not GiDP ONCE for the entire 2022 postseason run.

Probably one of the greatest rookie season for an infield player. I honestly don't know how Pena is going to top his 2022 season.

 

Easy, if his adjustment of removing the leg kick and quickening up his swing holds from last august into next season, he could easily crank out a 125 OPS+ year with GG defense, and churn out a high-level all star/down ballot MVP year.
