    Rockets coach Stephen Silas said he was hopeful that rookie forward Jabari Smith Jr. would be ready to return from his sprained left ankle in time to make his NBA debut in his hometown. Smith missed the final three preseason games.

    Silas said that guard/forward Garrison Mathews, who was out with an illness, and guard Daishen Nix, who left Monday’s game with a sore back and did not play on Friday, “are close.”

    Forward Jae’Sean Tate, who twice sprained his right ankle in the preseason, once in practice in Lake Charles and again early in last week’s game in Miami, is the least likely to be back in time for the opener.

    “It’s going good,” Tate said. “The training staff, they’ve been really good this last week in my recovery and trying to get out there with the guys. Our whole mindset is to try to do things to make sure this isn’t an ongoing thing that happens when the season gets here. We have a plan in place and we’re going to follow it.”

    Tate will work to strengthen the area to lead the medical staff to believe it will not be an ongoing problem.

    “There’s some things I have to show that I’m able to do so that I can be myself out there,” Tate said. “I’m having progress every day.

    “It’s definitely frustrating. I hate sitting down. But I give credit to the coaching staff and even Rafael (Stone, the Rockets general manager) and my teammates, they’ve been there every step of the way. They know I get the jitters and make sure I know that I need to take care of this so it doesn’t linger.”

    So many exciting storylines this upcoming season. I can't wait for this season to start.
    Genuinely excited about all parts of the org, from top to bottom, not just the team.

    - Stone has been brilliant thus far IMO. I'm confident with what he'll do no matter what happens this season as far as our standing and draft position next year
    - Loved the changes we made in the off season with our coaching staff and it's already starting to look like they're having a very positive influence on our young guys
    - Just about every player on our squad is young with crazy potential

    Start time is almost the same as the Astros. It's definitely going to be a two-screen kind of night. Let's hope for all the Houston sports wins on Wednesday!
