Say you have a post season tournament - where all the teams that are in the lottery compete for the top pick and the winner gets the first pick....could even do the entire lottery that way......top 6 picks decided etc in tourney than 7-12 ish are awarded based upon worst record remaining.

Tie some cash to it for the players....

Why would any current player give a crap about a draft pick? That’s just someone who could take their job. Ridiculous idea

There would be compensation in it for the players...the further you go the more money you get....the players generally don't want to tank, and some are held out when healthy.

Seems this might be a way for them to make more $$$$ and be encouraged to win.

No thanks. The play in game is garbage, this Midseason trash they will start, get rid of all of it. It’s all awful

this would also make rebuilding impossible. Rockets for example lose the jalen pick and also wouldn’t get the jabari pick because we’d always draft 10-14. Would completely destroy the league

So a mediocre team slips down to the #8 worst team...not a good team...but better than the other 7 worse teams. You would almost be guaranteeing that the worst team would never get the first pick.

Nah. Players going to play hard for a team to draft a player that could potentially take their job? Leave the game like it is no “lottery tournament “ and definitely no in season tournament.

This would never work cuz teams trade their picks. If they don't have a pick at all why would they try.

you'd have to make trading picks illegal

A lottery to determine the teams' odds in the real lottery would be funny.

How about draft order according to records 10 years ago, best team pick first. That way, nobody tanks for short term and good teams trading their future picks to win now actually have some attraction. Not to mention, you know the value of a future pick now instead of blind luck guessing.

Isn’t the idea of the draft to try and encourage parity in the league? How can the best of the worst teams get the highest draft pick?

How about the team that can offer the most restaurant coupons gets a top 3 pick?

We all know this is already happening under the table, let's just make it official and put it out there for the public to stop the charade.

We need a scrub kumite where lotto teams send their 12th man and face off MMA champions to get replaced.

The ones who last longest gets a higher pick.

How about no draft lottery, but you can only get a top-five pick once every 5 years. So you might have incentive to tank once, but after that you don't--unless the sixth or seventh pick excites you. And even tanking one year is risky, because if you tank too hard, you may not crawl out of that hole very quickly and you wouldn't be getting particularly juicy picks after Year 1. The idea for this system is to discourage tanking in general--teams try to reload and compete all the time and if you have bad luck and fall to one of the worst few teams one year, you still get a top pick.

So over the course of 5 years, 25 different teams are guaranteed a top 5 pick?

That's a good point. Maybe make it 3 years. 15 different teams guaranteed to get top five picks over each cycle seems fine by me--it'll always be a team in the bottom half of the league. And if you've got one recently, you really don't want to remain anywhere near the bottom.

    Could be interesting

I recall when we were drafting YAO
Steve Francis would have STOMPED THE LEAGUE to not have us sitting at #2 and having to draft Jay Williams

    incentive ideas for tourney winners:
    - no salary cap for the following year
    - guaranteed top 5 pick
    - scott foster
    - 1st round bye
    - waive any player with no cap consequences
    - prime time tv spots

tho this is for owners, not players
