Is Golf a Sport or a game?

Both, just like basketball, tennis, baseball, hockey, football, soccer, and so on. It's a game that is a sport, so I guess game would be the classification.

 

definitely a sport. It's super hard and I don't have the patience for it.

 

The table above by Os pretty much sums it up, did anyone at the table say both/similar? Or were you trying to separate sports from games?

Like was this more a discussion game = non physical / sport = physical or something?

If it's games in general are not physical, then I guess you could say golf is technically more a game, but I do think it's a sport because it does take some physical ability/repetitive motion and walking, haha, is it like playing basketball/hockey no... But it's more of a sport than billiards and both are in the Olympics for now...

Depends on the environment. hitting 18 holes over beers with your buddies on a Saturday is a more of a game. Playing professionally for the PGA or NCAA team is a sport. I'd argue Poker and chess are the same way, even though neither are physically taxing.

IMO to me a game means its causal or relatively low stakes. I think organization is also important. You can play a pick-up game of a sport...once its organized though, the conversation changes.

I wouldn't know... It wasn't offered in my schools nor the hood growing up.. But it seems like a sport as I grow older

 

Id say the same about jigsaw puzzles.

i played 18 holes once with a golf cart. tried walking another time and barely made it to the 9th. therefore it is a game.

 

It's the only sport where the objective is to play the least amount of the sport.

 

What about baseball? At least for pitching that's the case

 

Game, nothing sporty about it. Frisbee golf is more of a sport than golf.

The chart leaves off a critical factor. If the game depends on judges to decide a winner, it is not a sport. Diving, gymnastics, and such are activities, not sports. The participant cannot control a judge's biases and the judge is not bound by set rules like most referees are. (Which begs the question: Are the NBA playoffs a sport or an activity?)

Anyway, yes, pro golf, college golf, and high school golf are sport. It's a competition that demands physical performance. It'd be a lot more fun if, say, you could tackle the leader for a one stroke bonus, but even as is, it does require physical skill. Playing with drinking buddies on a Saturday afternoon because you don't want to be around your wife and kids is not a sport.
