I noticed you excluded any discussion of efficiency, defense, screens, rebounding and two way impact. Why is that?
Because this thread is about Wood's strengths. Speaking of 2 way impact, who is your preference for Rockets draft pick?
He will be an unrestricted FA after next season, so his next deal would likely take him from age 28 to 31. Those of you that like him, what's the most you'd be comfortable paying for his next deal?
I've had my issues with C Wood this season; but I know from that Washington Wizards game that they should have let the Rockets hibernate (Tank) in peace.... don't go poking the BEAR! Part of my blue print for success: Starters w/ Jabari Smith Porter jr Jalen Green Jabari Smith C Wood Sengun Small Ball lineup w/ Jabari Smith Porter jr Jalen Green Tate or Kenyon Jabari Smith C Wood _____________ Starters w/ Chet Porter jr Jalen Green C Wood Chet Sengun Small Ball lineup w/ Chet Porter jr Jalen Green Tate or Kenyon C Wood Chet _____________ Starters w/ Ivey Ivey Jalen Green Porter jr C Wood Sengun Small Ball lineup w/ Ivey Ivey Jalen Green Porter jr Tate or Kenyon C Wood ________________ Throw in possibly moving up for Keegan Murray or Mathurin or Mark Williams or Tari Eason (or EJ Liddell or Kessler at #17) We would be good and set for a a few years....maybe 10. All further drafts would be gravy. Tap into free agency after Eric Gordon and Wall clear the books. DYNASTY BABY!!
Wood is actually a good rebounder (in the top 20 in total rebounding percentage) and a pretty efficient scorer at 60% true shooting percentage. The problem is that he can't guard anyone ever. He's not quick enough to keep up on the perimeter and not strong enough to hold his ground in the paint. So, he can't be hidden on the weaker wing the way Steph are Harden were in their primes. I think he would be at his peak potential next to a great defending big. I just don't know if there will ever be enough room under the cap for that kind of roster construction.
Wood has the talent to be a truly valuable piece to a championship team at the 4 slot. He has handles, shoots like a guard and is agile and long. When he's on, he's spectacular, as shown in the clips in the first post. His talent is undeniable. But, what's also undeniable is that he doesn't fit this team, because despite his talent, he doesn't play team ball, doesn't hustle consistently, and slows down the game when trying to be a playmaker. We played better without him in the last stretch of the season, and We need to move him this summer. And that would benefit both him and the team. His ideal situation would be a vet team with a set hierarchy and discipline, like the Heat for example. In settings like that I think he can be reigned in and pushed to not do too much, but play hard and play to his strengths.
I don't like him... but I'll answer anyway lol I know a lot can change by next summer but, show me a team with projected cap space who also would be willing to lock him in to a 3 or 4 year deal. if not, its looking like NTMLE is the market value. I also don't see another team where he'd be a starter. I think he's likely to end up in a 6th man roll on a playoff team.
I'm just hoping that the rockets showcased him enough this season for someone else to buy into him. He kind of reminds me of Ariza and Kevin Martin when they were forced into number 1 options here. He's just not that guy. But can Silas get him to buy into doing the dirty work needed for this team to succeed? I highly doubt it. Mobley was the only guy I thought that we had a chance at that would have been complimentary with him. Despite his talent, it's harder thinking how to make Wood work than it is thinking how to get a lesser or unproven player that just fits better. Just thinking about him in limbo kind of makes me want to see Silas fired to see if someone else could light a fire under Wood...
It's EASIER to get an offensive player to learn to play defense, than a defensive player to learn to play offense
Ya i think he views himself as a 20-25 mil a year guy so maybe with a reality check contract he would realize he’s not all that like he thinks
True, but it comes down to willingness and better coaching. Wood and Silas are made for each other. The Rockets are suffering because of them to a large extent.
I concur, I don't want him to leave, I want a coach to hold him accountable. We have wanted a big that can rebound and hit 3pt shots FOREVER, and his contract is cheap....I think he is a keeper - unless we have to include him in a trade. Just get other players to play around him to cover his weaknesses. IMHO, he needs a LEADER on the court to create a hierarchy, and let him fall in line. DD
Put Wood in the 3rd or 4th option role, no one saying he is an all time great or will be first option on championship team.
Chet will replace Wood for us as he has potential to be just as good ofensively and he will play better defense. This is ofcourse being super optimistic that we will draft at 1st and get Chet.
