Computer help need (Mac)

    Computer help needed (Mac)

    I was happy to receive my refurbed 1.8 G5 today. That was until I couldn't get it to start. After hooking everything up I went to turn it on. I can hear the low sound of the fans working. The white power lights on both the computer and display do not stay on (only when I push them do they light up). If I keep the computer on the fans start to run louder and faster within a minute or two. Still nothing on the display. It's almost as if the computer is in sleep mode.

    I tried calling Apple care tonight but the guy I talked to wasn't very helpful. (His english was hard to understand, I'm sure he's a nice guy though). He had me open it up and push a small button behind the fans for about 3 seconds. Nothing. His next advice was to take it to an Apple Store. That wasn't exactly the advice I was hoping for as a new Apple user. I tried calling back to get another technician but they were closed (of course).

    Any ideas??

    First double check you monitor cable.

    If that is ok then...

    You should have received a disc with system software (a restore cd).

    Put that cd in the cd drive then restart the computer holding down the c key.

    If the computer starts up on the cd you know you just have a system problem and you can reinstall (restore) the system software from that cd.

    I'd had a couple dozen new macs come out of the boxes over the years and I've never had this problem. Consider it a fluke that will pass.

    If you are going to do that, just slash your wrist with the restore cd, it will be less painful. :D

    Doing some research on the Apple discussion boards the problem could possible be the "logic board". I have no idea what that is. I'll give your cd idea a try.

    Here's an update that I'm not happy about:

    I took my machine into the Apple Store this morning and after a diagnotics test I was given a repair estimate that read:

    Processor $429.69
    Logic Board $664.06
    Video Card $179.69
    Total: $1,273.44

    Of course the machine is just out of the box so it is all covered under warranty, but I have to ask: HOW CAN THEY SELL ME A MACHINE WITH THIS MANY PROBLEMS???

    I mean, c'mon, I can understand something happening in transit. But the box had not marks on it whatsoever. Wouldn't you think a refurbished unit would be checked over and over again before it is sold and sent out?

    I plan on writing or emailing my complaint to someone but am not sure who I should address it to. Any suggestions? I'd send it to Mr. Jobs himself if I knew where to send it.

    That is a really bad deal. Someone along the line was asleep at the switch because there's no reason a computer (refurbished or no) should arrive like that. You wouldn't think all those problems could just slip through.

    But even the best-run companies have screw-ups now and again. I've never heard of anything like what you've experienced happening with any Apple machine, but clearly, it can happen now and again.

    At least you're covered for everything but the hassle.

    Faos is a liar. Macs never have problems. Only PC's do. Macs are God's gift to humanity. :D

    Love that potential repair bill : You could buy another computer with that! Come to think of it, a processor + mobo + video card is just about a new computer.

    Yes (technically it's just another name for any motherboard and vice versa).

    And yes... that's a truckload for a motherboard.

    Sorry to hear about your troubles, Faos. Its true though: there's a lemon in every bunch, and you got a damn big lemon.

    I'd still rather use a Mac for absolutely anything. Just my two cents.

    I got the computer back and am using it now (I hate the Apple mouse).

    It turns out all those things I listed were not the problems. They had to change out a processor because they did not match in the dual processor system. Normally it would have been a $650 job but of course I am still under warranty so there's no charge.
