Ok, Last week, I went up for a rebound and came down on someone's foot and my right ankle bent all the way to the ground. I went to the Doctor as my ankle swelled and turned purple. He saw 2 hairline fractures, one on each side of the ankle. The question I have is, has anyone ever done this before? How long did it take before you could remove the stupid walking boot? How long before you could get back on the basketball court? The biggest issue is we have a trip to Lake Tahoe at the end of July with a lot of hiking and outdoor activities planned, and I hope to be ready for that.... HELP !!! DD
I was stupid and do any real treatment and tried to play on it a few weeks later. It took me almost a year.
Depends on how fast you heal. I played the entire basketball playoffs when I was in high school with a hairline fracture on my fibula. I did just fine and we won a state title, but needless to say, I was off my feet for a while after that. I missed half the baseball season because of it.
It should read, didn't do treatment (ie., elevate, ice it enough, stay off of it). It just felt very weak for a long time. Stairs were especially difficult. Before I would just run down em. Took a while before i could do that. If its black and blue, I can't imagine you hiking or skiing...
Sorry to hear that, DaDa - hope you get better soon. Perhaps DallasRocket can give some advice, I think he is a doctor...
Wow sounds exactly like what happened to me ... Mine happened about 2 weeks ago and today is the first day I am walking without crutches. I am still in pain when I walk and pretty much have to take my shoe off whenever possible because I am still swollen. I hope to be feeling good enough to walk around for long distances in another week so if you have all the way till the end of July I'd say you're probably good. But i guess you might not want to listen to me since I am still hobbling around. It just feels damn good not using crutches!
Sorry to hear of your woes DaDa. Good thing you lost all that weight though. Less pressure on your ankles.
coma, how many more times will I have to kill you before you change your signature? Edit: Damn, you did it while I was typing this post!!!
DaDa, By the end of July, You should be fine... Most bones in the body heal after completely breaking in 6 weeks.... But considering it's a weight-bearing part of your body, but only hairline fractures, I still think it'll even out.... Just take it incredibly easy, ice it, elevate it, and doing ankle excersizes every day, if you can tolerate it. The excersizes are a good measurement of how much mobility or strength you have lost or gained, and it keeps things in working order, stimulates bloodflow, etc etc etc - it's just a good thing to do, if possible.
Dadakota, I think I can relate. Just over three weeks ago I did the same thing. I jumped and landed on someone elses foot, by my ankle actually dislocated - it was stuck out of place (basically at right angles to me leg) and I had to have it relocated in the emergency room. I ended up spending two days in hospital while they did tests to see if I needed surgery (which I didn't), and now I am in a cast for the next 4 weeks ( 7 weeks total). I have some "avulsion" fractures and major ligament damage, but no hairline fractures. The scary thing is, this is the second time I have done the exaxct same injury - the first was over 12 years ago. It is exceptioanally rare (so they tell me) and I was advised to seriously consider not playing basketball again. Enough of my sad story, here is what I suggest for you. Generally fractures will heal well and the bones will as strong as they were before. However, you also will have damaged your ligaments, and the ankle joint will be relatively unstable (i.e prone to injury) as a result - long after your fractures have healed. I don't kow how serious your ligament damage is, but I would suggest you need AT LEAST 2 months rest from sport. You also need to undertake some physio-therapy to strengthen the joint. Balancing on your injured leg with your eyes closed is a good one! I also suggest either strapping your ankle or wearing a McDavid brace like this one http://www.mcdavidinc.com/brace/a_prods/188.htm when ever you are playing serious sport. Hope it works out for you. I will have to watch my kids learn to ski in August rather than be out there with them as a result
A couple of vicodin washed down with 4 strong Crown and Cokes and you won't even remember you have ankles, let alone legs. That's Doctor RocketMan Tex's prescription. Your bill from my HMO will be forthcoming!
I did the same thing about 20 years ago; it took me about 10 months to get back out on the court. It still hurts, too!
