At the same time, he's not going to spend more on a team that is spinning its wheels, lacks superstar/marketing potential, and lacks a minor league system influx of talent. Why would he? He knows the fans will come back if/when the team starts winning again. You can get away with what the Rockets/Texans are currently doing (and what the Astros did) in a city like Houston. Houston supports winners. They lose interest/gain apathy for teams not in contention. You'd wish there was an in-between that would limit that, but at the same time not all sports markets will support winners in the same way that Houston does. Its a low floor-high ceiling sports city.
It's honestly crazy how universally loved the Astros are in this city (right now). There is not a single HEB, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. in the entire metro area that doesn't have a customer walking around it in some Astros gear right now. Pretty dope.
Having a historic run of 1 championship, 2 WS, 4 ALCS appearances, 3 (maybe 4) 100 win seasons does help… truly the golden age. Also, can’t say they have had much competition in the city since the CP3/Harden year (and even then, basketball season/playoffs only minimally overlap with baseball).
Exactly. Especially not when you have a 4 year window as a very real contender if you sign correa now. Worry about 2028 when it gets there.
Anyone know the structure of Baez contract? Holding out hope next season is some sort of team option that can be declined.
