What's the best tool to just share files with a friend - if I don't want to share files with the whole world, but just "targeted" with people I know - I have XP and he has a Mac (OS X).

Having trouble sending/receiving files through instant messaging.

    Any advice?

    Thanks!

The files are too big for e-mail...and I don't know how we would do it on IRC. I'll look into the FTP server thing...

Think of FTP servers as a remote hard drive, you can use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload your files onto those hard drives, and anyone who has the access to this hard drive can get the files you put on there.

FTP server software enables you to have remote access to your cpu. You create accounts for people, give them passwords and designate what files and folders they may access, etc.

Me too, but as I wrote in my initial post, for some unknown reason, that was not working between his and my computer.

The official AIM client on OS X is pretty crappy, and has several bugs. Since his Mac has a built-in FTP server, that's the easiest option.

I also tried it on IRC (your own modes prohibit you from sending that kind of message), on ICQ, and on MSN...

I am using Trillian Pro, not sure if it is a bug in the newest version that causes the problems, because I did not have them before, and now I seem to have that kind of trouble with a lot of people when trying to send/receive.

Working inside of a LAN may cause problems with file sharing.

I'm at home (wireless DSL), had turned my firewall off temporarily, too...don't know what the "%!% problem is :). But it works with his FTP server.

You might want to be careful of when you turn this on and off. I personally would not recommend leaving this up 24/7 because it creates a real security risk for both machines. You can set designated times for both of you or something.

Yes, I think I would just want to use it when we are both at the computer anyway.

    Thanks for the tips! :)
