saw lots of great shows there too. fishbone & primus in fall 1991. RHCP, pearl jam and pumpkins played there the next night and i only had money for one of those shows...no regrets. public enemy, anthrax and primus in 1991 or 2. beastie boys in 1992. sonic youth, pavement and painteens in 1992. janes addiction played there in 1991, but it was a school night.
I saw Janes it was a classic -- thank you for refreshing my memory Pearl Jam, Pumpkins, and RHCP was the crazy show I saw at Austin Music Hall. Pearl Jam was just breaking out and I think Pumpkins were touring for Gish.
willie and waylon - "mamas dont let your babies grow up to be cowboys" kid rock - "i wanna be a cowboy baby"
My first two concerts were The Cars and Van Halen at the Music Hall. Both were great. Went to a lot of others during my late highschool/early college years (1979-1983), including Texxas Jam 1981 in the Astrodome with a very good Heart as the headliner. Foghat was awesome, REO Speedwagon sucked, BOC was OK, and Bryan Adams was young. Caught the 1982 Texxas Jam in Dallas with Ozzy (bad), Loverboy (who?), Journey (OK), Foreigner (OK), Santana (good), Sammy Hagar (Very sucky: "I'm the Red Rocker!"), and Joan Jett (decent). Saw The Who in Dallas when Pete got mad at the crew and smashed his guitar for one of the last times... Billy Squier opened. I loved Aerosmith and they did not disappoint. Spent a summer catching every Joe Ely concert I could including an opening for Tom Petty... both those bands in the early 80's were tight. Saw The Police in Austin and thought we had crappy tickets as they were behind the stage, but spent the whole time looking over Stewart Copeland's shoulder in awe of his drumming. Caught Fleetwood Mac on a night when John McVie was sick and had to sit out for about 30 minutes mid-show, leading to Stevie and Lindsey just doing acoustic-y songs by themselves... Landslide was awesome. Pretty sure some of my tinnitus/hearing loss was baked in at a Ted Nugent concert. Saw The Stones, but wasn't that impressed as the only one who moved at all was Mick and the rest seemed to be going through the motions... enjoyed the Fabulous T-Birds and ZZ Top as the openers better... plus the cute little Hockaday girl who thought she was cool. Saw Boston at their height of fame and it was a good show. ELO was pure crap and worst major concert I've been to... they just did a 25 minute medley and walked off stage. Tull was good, Styx was OK, The Eagles were OK with lots of crowd sing-alongs as you might expect. Alvin Lee opened for Kansas and that was decent, though Kansas probably didn't have enough top material to carry a headline concert. Springsteen was still new to Texas but his show in 1980 was killer and made me an absolute fan. Rush was good and Triumph had a decent song or two. AC/DC was loud and decent. Queen was a blast and another where I wasn't into the band that much but came out a big fan. Haven't been to many since that timeframe. You get older, priorities change. I also realized I don't like masses of people that much.
Man, jealous of all you dudes. Then again, I guess it means y'all are more advanced in age than I am, so suck on that. =p My first concert was Green Day on the Insomniac tour. Yipee. It was still awesome. Probably the coolest show I went to was the Strokes in 2001 at the 9:30 club just a few months after Is This It came out. There wasn't even an opener. They just came out and started playing the entire album in order with no interruptions and no banter (including New York City Cops from UK version). The whole show wasn't longer than 45 minutes, and then they left without an encore. It was awesome!
fishbone & primus in fall 1991. Was there RHCP, pearl jam and pumpkins played there the next night and i only had money for one of those shows...no regrets. Was there for both, but my memory's foggy about the lineup public enemy, anthrax and primus in 1991 or 2. Was there, possibly a top 5 show of my life beastie boys in 1992. Was there sonic youth, pavement and painteens in 1992. Not a big fan, so I was not there janes addiction played there in 1991. Was there I do sort of remember most of these nights.
the unicorn was off 59 and tidwell and was a former grocery store. i think it was also a boxing arena for local fights at some point. the vatican was off washington, just south of I-10. much smaller room than the unicorn. the back of the room had those tiered levels where you could go sit down. wasnt the vatican also a former (porno) theater? and what name did it change to...i cant 'member that one. im just remembering this one, but did anyone else go to the woodlands in summer 1992 for that festival put on by that short lived "alternative" station? peter murphy headlined and that was my first time to see flaming lips. cracker was there. i think L7. it was an all day thing and even though there was only one stage, it must have had at least a half dozen bands. im google searching and i cant find anything about that show other than this. https://www.woodlandscenter.org/events/peter-murphy-with-flaming-lips-nymphs--cracker
I’ve bragged about this before, but I’m gonna do it again. Saw a BUNCH of concerts at Lakewood chu.......errr.....the Summit, but the most memorable had to be in early 1985. Went to that record store in Pasadena to meet Blackie Lawless, then ate some Mexican food and had plenty of margaritas. Went to the Sunmit and saw W.A.S.P. Open for Iron Maiden (loves Iron Maiden, and they did not disappoint). Immediately after their encore, hopped in my 1977 Buick Le Sabre with my buddies and drove down Westheimer to Cardis. Watched Armored Saint open for this little club playing band called Metallica. Great night.
One of my more memorable randomass shows was 95ish, Fugazi, at a roller rink on the North Loop around Cavalcade? maybe. The were literally set up at one end of a ****ing rollerskating rink. There were ~100 people there. It was glorious.
This was one of my first concerts. I was in jr. high and went with my cousin. As I remember, there were three back to back shows in the Astrodome. We went to the first one and some one was killed at one of the later shows. Other memorable shows include U2, Springsteen, Bowie, and Sade at the Summit. RHCP, Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge, Little Feat, The Smithereens and NWA in Austin. NWA was the worst concert I've ever seen and I'm eternally bummed that I passed up seeing Tom Petty that same night.
Fishbone and Primus was incredible. Public Enemy, Anthrax and Primus was the same day Redd Foxx died. I remember we had 30 seconds of noise for him during Public Enemy.
I took my wife to The Who about four years ago. Daltrey was falling apart then; he must have found another gear. Saw Journey twice, Frontiers and Raised on Radio. I don't love them as I did, although I'll still listen to "Stay Awhile" etc etc once in a while. Tina Turner. OK, not actually "rock", but she rocked. Hagar, as I mentioned in another post. Quiet "c*m On Feel the Noy-HOYZ!" Riot. Hey, I was 14. Too young for shame. But I will say, do not be jealous I saw them. ZZTop (MTV era). These three dudes put out a lot of sound.
For me there was NOTHING like the point in every performance of Spirit of Radio during the breakdown when Geddy screams "CONCERT HALL!!" and the house lights come up and everybody goes berserk!
