But thats crap. If Johann Gutenberg hadn't invented the printing press someone sooner or later would have. If John Deere hadn't invented the steel plow, someone else would have later. This doesn't mean we have to take away from the accomplishment.
By that token, does Clint Murchison, Jr. deserve any credit for bringing football to Dallas? They did get the Cowboys expansion team, but there probably wouldn't have been an expansion team in Dallas for 1960 if not for Lamar Hunt. Or if Bud Adams followed through on his threat to move the Oilers the first time he threatened to move them (in 1960), would he still get credit for bringing pro football to Houston?
I'm guessing that had Gutenberg moved his printing press company out of town...his hometown wouldn't later honor him as a legend.
The Oilers were only the most popular team in Houston for nearly 40 years... I don't care for him, but he was a big figure in Houston sports history.
and he ends up as the ultimate henchman to Houston sports. the guy who threatened to move multiple times...and finally did. he ran one of the most poorly managed sports franchises ever. he is associated, in this town, with everything that is wrong with pro sports. no, thanks.
