LAKE CHARLES, La. - Rockets guard Eric Gordon said the Rockets did approach his representatives in the offseason about a contract extension beyond the two seasons remaining on his contract, but that while hoping to remain with the Rockets long-term he does not expect to extend his current deal. Gordon is in the third season of a four-year, $52 million contract. Because the Rockets are over the salary cap and may only offer raises from Gordon's current contract of up to eight percent in an extension, Gordon could attract larger offers from the Rockets or other teams as a free agent. "There was extension talks, but nothing really serious," Gordon said. "I would much rather be here as long as I can. Everything will work out. I'll be here another two years. We'll see what happens. I'll see how the next two years go, but I would definitely like to be here the rest of my career."
Gordon does not understand that our Big 4 has $109 million at 2020. If he wants 2 years 40 million. We are in the repeater tax. We are already at repeater tax before we add 6 million MLE player.
If Clippers, Nets or Knicks offer him 2 years 50 million in 2020, he is gone. Tilman is really scary of repeater tax.
With Tilman's stated desired to avoid the repeater tax I don't really know how the Rockets will be able to do anything in a few years. Will be interesting to see how they handle the next few years. I won't be shocked if they avoid multi year MLE deals.
I wouldn't worry too much about the repeater tax, at least not in relation to Harden/Capela/etc. Either we win it all, in which case the repeater tax is justified, or we don't and CP3 is traded. He might even welcome a trade/buyout. The question will be how tradable he will be at 2 years / $80+ million, but there's a decent chance that someone will take a chance on him being the difference maker.
Extending him could really backfire if he starts getting injured again. I'm ok with him playing until the end of his contract, or maybe we trade him. Not concerned about this.
Ironic that this would drop now amid rumors of EGo being the centerpiece in our offer for Tomball Jimmy...
Next summer Gordon is a rental, little trade value We don't have enough depth in 2020 if he is gone. We don't have any cap room at all. Paul 36 years old Tucker 35 years old Tillman is unlikely to spend MLE.
