ScarJo is #6 on top grossing actors you can't just replace her with an unknown and expect returns.

I look forward to hillary swank returning her Oscar for doing the same thing tho.

The issue probably isn't Johansson as much as it maybe people probably aren't comfortable enough to go see a movie starring a transgender.

    Those are separate issues

I wonder how many trans women are qualified (good actors) and can fill the seats? There was a series on Netflix a while back called Sense8 with a trans woman. i thought she was pretty good so they’re out there for sure. If I were a director I would try to find a trans woman but as others have pointed out, Scarlet Johansson will put buts in seats.

I’m assuming this is one of those controversies that is predicated on the outrage over the outrage of one stupid person on Twitter.

Fact is I think there is one major trans actor out there that I know of (from Orange is the new black), and the last actor who received praise for playing a trans character was Jared freaking Leto... not really the greatest representative of the trans community.

I think if Scarjo gives a great and honest performance and really brings out the humanity that makes films like this good, she will be met with praise. So I have no problem with it as long as the performance isn’t offensive in nature and they present a good compelling drama.

There is some aspect of this in the trans activist community. They hit all the key victim buzzwords. They pretty much echo the victim mentality of the leftist activists. However, the trans activist community doesn't represent trans people and I think a part of the activist movement in the current form is not good for trans people. The problem is the loud voices get the most attention and not necessarily the most representative quieter voices that just want to live their lives.

This is fake outrage. I also saw how the article mentioned Scarlett's role in Ghost in the Shell.

This was more fake outrage. People who live in Japan were not outraged by her playing a Japanese character.

That series was made by Transgender director . . . .representation matters
and having people in key positions. People with power.

I have heard good things about sense8 but I dunno how its ratings are

This is just the left eating itself again.

If you want to advance the cause and profile of transgender people, having one of the biggest box office names in the world play the part is a good way to do it.

I mean sure, having a giant boxoffice smash with an unknown transgender person would be cool too, but this is kind of the whole premise of "acting".

    Pretty spot on.
I think every minority group has gone through something similar
Yellowface has been a problem for a long time . . .many Asians miss opportunities etc

I think the issue is to push the profile of minorities up
In this case. . . surely there are some other Transfolx in it. . . .just not as the main character
IF there are no transfolx in it. . then I can see the beef

The American public flatly rejects tokenism, and with good reason.

Just make the best product/art you can.

If it involves trans-people, great. If not, the ball is still moving towards the goal at maximum efficiency.

Hollywood is a business. Its first objective is making the most amount of money.

Nobody is going to bankroll your social cause unless they can flip a few bucks off it.

Re-casting minority parts with straight cis white people isn't a middle finger towards that minority group, it's an open fist towards a giant pile of cash.

I think that the vast majority of people, including many transgenders, that are aware of this "issue" don't really give a damn either way. The outrage is way overblown. Using Scarlett for this role is a good business decision, especially if she does a good acting job. DonnyMost's posts here are spot on.

Exactly. If it was Streep cast in this role it would be an entirely different story. Especially coming off of Ghost in a Shell. I stand by my statement but I realize she’s just not a great actor imo so it could very well come off offensive in tone in the end. It just seems odd to be offended by Scarjo playing a transvestite and not offended by Leto playing one. If it’s good quality writing, directing, and acting I’m sure it will be fine.

What does that tell you about us, and what will our non-viewership of this movie tell you about us?

I'm disappointed Optimus Prime wasn't cast for the role, but I think it's progress when Bumblebee gets his own movie.

Jeffrey Tambor in 'Transparent' got a ton of praise the last couple of years, it was a damn good show too, and then he got outed as a total jackass.
