*shrug* No Reason a Transgendered person should not have gotten the job . . . ..
except they won't put asses in the seats like Scajo will

The thing is that with out a star of ScaJo's status those this movie get made?
I don't think ScaJo should be the issue . . . because if she backs out. .. does this movie even get made?

I think he isn't complaining that a straight person is playing a transgender but rather saying why isn't a transgender actor ever picked to play a straight person?

Maybe because acting is a skill suited for the best. The # of non-transgenders compared to transgender people is vastly in favor of non-transgenders. Only something like 0.5% of the pop is transgender.

Lets assume the ratio is the same for actors. If you have 100,000 actors, that means like 500 are trans-gender. If 10,000 actors land roles in a given year the likleyhood of them being transgender is very low.

They can't just be happy that a feature film is being made about a trans person and that the company got a mega star to accept the role meaning that likely millions of people will see the film around the world. It seems important in this community to be a victim at all costs.

Its a bit confusing. I had to think about. She is playing a guy who has transitioned.

I think the person (who is a successful transgender actor) is saying that transgender folks don't' even get to audition. I could see there being a bias against them - can't you?

I don't have an issue with SCJ playing a transgender person, but I think it's fair to ask the questions as I am not transgender so can't really see the viewpoint. I do know that you don't have a lot of white people playing black folks and you don't have women playing men or men playing women so there may be a point.

They aren't auditioning for this role because the part was pre-selected ahead of time to S-Jo. This is very common. Netflix has a deal with Will Smith. You think people will complain about not getting to audition for the role specifically written for him in his next upcoming movie? No.

I think transgenders per capita to their population numbers are being represented fairly. Orange is the new Black has a transgender actor. The bold and the beautiful, and so on and so on. The talent pool is small compared to other talent pools so you will see them represented less, but i think the distribution and opportunity is fair.

You just referenced a successful transgender actor in your post. So opportunity is absolutely there.

Being transgender is not an externally visible trait, like sex or race. No more so than being gay.

At the risk of stating the obvious, if a trans person wants to a movie role, they will need to look believable in that role. Perhaps it’s not impossible, but probably really hard depending on how far they have transitioned. Much easier for a non-trans person to physically look like they are trans, then vice versa.

Like I said, I think the issue was she was saying they don't even get auditioned. I don't think this is a big controversy though and seems like the media blowing it up - it was after all just one person who is raising this as an issue.

The reaction i've seen has been really over the top though -- they're attacking Scarlett like she's done something wrong for accepting the role.

I think her response through her manager was pretty dismissive (am looking into this now) and that might why she is taking some flak. I do think it is a bit short-sighted. I can understand casting a major movie star to get a movie out there and that might actually do more to educate an audience that casting an unknown trans actor.

At the same time given the history of hollywood when even black actors couldn't get roles playing black men....could you imagine if they cast a white person to play MLK for instance? - it does seem short-sighted and questions whether the filmmakers are trying to make something around shinning a light to something important or just maximize profits.

It's a fair debate to be had. Personally, I would have suggest to cast some trans actors in at least a few supporting roles.

    I think Ralph Feines played Mike Jackson . . . . awkward

That Said .. . the greater issue i think is. . . No Scajo . . .No Movie
    Period
Don Cheadle could not get the Miles Davis movie made unless they put in a white costar
    That is Hollywood

They have some PreReqs that are . .. not nice .. . before they pay for a movie to be made

One of them is . . .they have to get their money back
If some Obscure Trans Actor/Actress played the role in this movie
How many asses get in those seats . . . .
now . . . .. AMERICANS not seeing the movie says something about Americans
But that is not the issue being discussed

The bottom line is . .. . .the question to ask . . .. IF this movie was made with a Transgendered person
Would it make its money back? a profit?

Like I said, having a supporting roles or two with a trans character would not impact the movie negatively in box office receipts
