yes but so many other players they could have dropped 15 large on who would probably help them more and fit into their future plans with their young core. ie. could have just overpaid for joe harris or jerami grant. and there's still plenty of other guys available like tyreke, ellington, hezonja, noel, okafor, mike scott. instead of giving that money to a couple of these guys together or even trying for one of the RFA's like vanvleet or smart, they sign 33yr old ariza in the first 5min of free agency smh

Probably because the suns knew they weren't going to sign anyone significant this year and had to spend that money. So they gave a massive 1 year deal without hindering their future cap.

Makes no sense. They already have Jared Dudley as the mentor.

Suns were looking for a stretch PF, so I guess they pegged Ariza for that.

Personally if I were the Suns I would have looked at Marcus Smart of Fred VanVleet with that money.

and as @hongxingli smartly pointed out above, they could have probably used that salary space to take back an expiring contract plus picks/assets from a team needing to shed lux tax $

I don't think a player can return to his old team within a 1 yr period after a buyout. this applies to waived players too i think.

doesnt apply to ariza. he wasnt waived by houston. he made his own decision as a FA. if he gets bought out, he can go wherever he wants as long hes bought out before the deadline to be eligible for playoffs

If he was traded. This is a free agent signing. The rockets and ariza had no obligations to each other this season.

Now if we S&T. That's a different story.

Ariza signed a 1 year $15 million deal in order to be able to match Ryan Anderson's contract. He will be swapped for Ryan Anderson by February.

I hope you are wrong. The Ariza Ship has sailed IMO. Will miss his Defense , but will not miss his 2-18 3pt shooting

I can't think of a situation ever where a good player was signed to a 1yr deal and cut before the deal was done. Seems like a dumb idea but here I am thinking about it....

I could see some value in Phoenix using Ariza's contract as a way to play the trade market - essentially he is an expiring contract for a team looking to get out from under some salary - could be a savvy way of pick up an extra pick along the way(either via team to team trade or by facilitating a 3 team trade) or since they aren't getting meetings with high level FAs, as a way to trade for a player who otherwise wouldn't give them a meeting. If you got open cap space, it's not a bad idea to have a chip like this just in case.
