It's appalling that the buffoon cozied up to the Saudis and then tried to stick it to the Euros. Just disgusting and dangerous.

Angela Merkel says Germany can no longer rely on Donald Trump's America: 'We Europeans must take our destiny into our own hands'

Angela Merkel has suggested Germany and Europe can no longer rely on the US under Donald Trump.

Speaking at a campaign event held in a Bavarian beer tent, the German Chancellor emphasised the need for friendly relations with the US, Britain and Russia, but added: “We Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands.”

Ms Merkel said that as the traditional western alliance is threatened by the new US presidency and Brexit, “the times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over, as I have experienced in the past few days.”

While Germany and Europe would strive to maintain relations with the US and Britain, Ms Merkel said, “we need to know we must fight for our own future as Europeans for our destiny.”

Her comments came after Mr Trump said he needed more time to decide if the US would continue backing the Paris climate deal, which has frustrated European diplomats.

Mr Trump, who has previously called global warming a hoax, came under concerted pressure from the other leaders to honour the 2015 Paris Agreement on curbing carbon emissions.

Although he tweeted to say he would make a decision next week, his apparent reluctance to embrace the first legally binding global climate change deal, signed by 195 countries, clearly annoyed Ms Merkel.

“The entire discussion about climate was very difficult, if not to say very dissatisfying,” she told reporters.

“There are no indications whether the United States will stay in the Paris Agreement or not.”

G7 leaders went on to blame the US for the failure to reach an agreement on climate change, in an unusually frank statement which read: “The United States of America is in the process of reviewing its policies on climate change and on the Paris Agreement and thus is not in a position to join the consensus on these topics.

“Understanding this process, the heads of state and of government of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom and the presidents of the European Council and of the European Commission reaffirm their strong commitment to swiftly implement the Paris Agreement."

Mr Trump has reportedly told “confidants” including the head of the Environmental Protection Angency Scott Pruitt, he wants the US to leave the international agreement on climate change, the Axios news outlet reported, citing three sources with direct knowledge.

A source who has been in contact with people involved in the decision told Reuters a couple of meetings were planned with chief executives of energy companies and big corporations and others about the climate agreement ahead of Mr Trump¦s expected announcement later in the week.

It was unclear whether those meetings would still take place.

Despite the Trump administration’s talk of an “America first” policy and ongoing criticism of Germany for its massive trade surplus, the G7 summit in Sicily did vow to fight protectionism, reiterating “a commitment to keep our markets open”.

They also agreed to step up pressure on North Korea, to forge closer cooperation in the fight against terrorism, on the possibility of imposing more sanctions on Russia over its role in the conflict in Ukraine.

This is music to Putins ears. Trump is acting as an agent for Russia even in a passive sense.

Where are the America first folks to argue that "America Alone" is actually a good thing? I guess as long as we got the Saudis to sell us their oil right?

Anyone want to guess how long before those sanctions are lifted in Russia so Exxon can go make good on their 500 billion dollar shared investment with Russia?

Why wouldn't Europe take their destiny into their own hands? Is that supposed to upset us?

They want to fight "global warming" they can do that themselves. We are not willing to allow 400,000 job loss annually. Good job President Trump.

The main person who orchestrated this and is thrilled about it is Steve B. Y'all, whatever your "team" should listen to the new Front Line special on him and his apocalyptic vision for the world and this country.

I have started to wonder, along those lines, if Bunyon worked to leak the K'ner information, to weaken him and drive that rival weasel further from two scoops.

Khrushchev and Stalin are doing the hopak in hell. They spent half a century trying to pry Germany away from America and The Donald just discards Germany like so much refuse.

This is exactly why Putin is working so hard to support isolationist nationalist movements. Huge win for Russia.

It's already happening if the usual cautious Merkel made the comments she made Publicly. Macron also just compared Trump to Erdogan and Putin this morning.

In the world you need alliances to stay safe and for your economy to survive globally. My question is for the GOP, how will they react when the US is forced into a decision on standing alone ala North Korea, or having to allie with Russia and other bad actors to keep alliances around the world?

I know we are still a ways from that reality but first steps will be the hault of intelligence sharing which we know is a reality. Second will be trade renegotiations, and third tariffs. I'm just asking how the GOP leadership will react if we truly get to a place where our only alliances will be Russia, Turkey, and maybe China (who at this point is far from reaching out as a friend). Australia/US and Japan/US relationships will be ones to watch since they will likely get pressure from EU to make decisions if it comes to it.

I think we are far from that point now but I can certainly see a pattern here and just wondering what the GOP would do at that point.

Sounds like good news to me, it's about time they stopped relying on the US for everything and opted to do a bit more of their own heavy lifting.

To me this is a total non-story. Merkel said "we need to know we must fight for our own future as Europeans for our destiny.” Well of course - that's your freaking job, lady. Did you expect somebody else to do it on your behalf? What an obvious comment!

And then the rest of the complaints were centered around climate change. Remember when the US didn't agree to the Kyoto protocol? Then we were actually (by far) the first country to meet the standards. In my mind Europe acts very selfishly about climate change - they are the ones that stand to benefit the most from strict regulations, as they are a fossil fuel-poor region, and their economy isn't as impacted by strict regulations. All things equal, sure, it's better to not pollute, but at what economic cost?

About climate change: The person singlehandedly doing the most to fight it is Elon Musk. And he is doing that from the USA - not from Europe. What this tells me is that climate change is more likely to be effected by entrepreneurs than by governmental regulators. Same goes for any type of innovation. You create a climate that allows entrepreneurs to succeed, you get better results for society as a whole.

As to Merkel - I think she is not as insane as Trump, as a person, but she is a massive flip-flopper on so many issues. She actually seems to be campaigning against herself at this point - she is the one who let all the refugees in, now she is campaigning for more safety and security. And people are buying it. It's kind of mind-boggling. But then again, there really isn't a better choice in Germany right now, other than the Liberals (FDP) with their leader Christian Lindner. Everyone else is either even more leftist and delusional than Merkel (the SPD) or too close to being nationalist/racist/xenophobic assholes (like many in the AfD party). The least damaging outcome of the next elections would be Merkel's CDU + FDP winning, but whatever happens, as long as Merkel is in power, you get same ol', same ol'. Compared to Putin, Erdogan and yes, Trump...probably still preferable.
