Bad work ethic, lying to JVG about summer workouts, drug problems, and then wanting to quit basketball....That is freakin wonderful. I want to believe in him so bad, but he is pissing me off.

 

You know, I might be called a cold hearted b*stard for saying this, but I've definetely grown SICK AND TIRED of the 21 year old excuse.

It's easy to be immature and selfish, and give a damn about your employer and your obligations to him when you have the LUXURY of doing so.

Most kids here in Brazil start working at the tender age of 14 and are forced to become adults way before they should, and face the responsabilities that come with working, having to help their family and provide some much needed income.

I'm sure most if not all of my students would jump at the opportunities that "poor, lost" Eddie had and is throwing away. Heck, probably all of us would.

Enough with the 21 year old excuse. You are either a fighter or a quitter, and that is part of your character. If you don't have it in you, no amount of help will make you have it.

Geez, some of you talk about a 21 year old MAN as if he was in his early teens and could barely shave!~

Spare me of this nonsense!

 

Man, this is exactly how I feel. I wasn't as high on him this year as some of the people on the board were, but I though he was a quality backup pf that still had a chance to blossom into a good player.

But these articles depress me. Anger as well.

Potential and physical ability don't mean **** unless you work to cultivate it.

 

I want to believe that EG is just immature and will work everything out, and before I saw this article I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, if he really wants to quit, he is probably moving into the "fool" category in my mind.

I hope EG gives the Rockets a reason to think otherwise.

This opinion doesn't mean that I think the Rockets shouldn't try to help him. There is nothing wrong with treating the symptoms AND the illness at the same time.

 

This is REALLY sad! If he wants to quit basketball then quit and fix your problems. Im also getting tired of the excuse of him being 21! If he has that bad of a problem in his personal life then he needs to quit baskeball for a lwhile and do wut he's got to do! What he really neds to do is worry about his child! That is a BIG responsibility especially when your young! (I should know) He should be thinking on how to fix the problems with his baby momma. The organization should help if they know they can. there are more important things in life than basketball.

 

It's shocking to hear such news. He does need emotional support but it's his decision to play or not. If he quits it will be a loss for us.I hope he can get the help he needs to get better.
I would like to know how much would the Rockets have to pay him if he decided to stop playing now.

 

You know in a wierd way I almost wish this was the problem because then we would at least have some answers to why this guy acts like he does.

Try this one on for size... my great grandfather told me it before he passed. "Son, your life is like a field. If you sow wheat, your field will be filled with wheat. If you sow weeds, your field will be filled with weeds. If you sow nothing, son, weeds will still fill your field.

He is an asset to this team that desearves to be cared for. He has already started sowing weeds. He's going to have to work hard to change some of the decisions he's made if he wants to stand for something. I mean, if he wants out of basketball, that is fine, but, there is an honorable way to go about it. He can't drag his feet through these problems either because his field is matturing by the moment and indecisiveness beggs for failure. His teammates, family, fans, and friends should support him and encourage him to make mature, well thought out, and progressive decisions. If, after all this, he decides to play basketball again, think of the renewed attitude and potential! If not in basketball, he will still have a better life because of it.

 

I think the only reason Eddie made it through the first 2 years is because of Rudy's easy system. I don't think Eddie has the desire, work ethic, or strength to even want to make it in the NBA. Now that JVG is running the show there is no way Eddie can survive how he did the first 2 years. Eddie knows he now has to work for the money which he obviously doesn't want to do. Let the guy quit, the team will be better off. Let's see where Eddie is in 2 years with the lack of effort and responsibility that he is showing.

 

The dilemna seems to be the argument about why kids need time in school to mature mentally, physically and spirtually. Playing professional sports is a combination of God-given talent, skills developed through hard work and the determination/drive to be your best. However, while that argument holds true in some instances, I don't think it applies universally.

I've seen some wonderful talent wasted because the player didn't have it mentally or the drive to become better.

So many of us that had the drive and the will to be better envied those with the great size and athletic ability. Those who have a balance reach their potential, those that don't never achieve the level that many of us expect.

EG is a classic underachiever in my book. Its a shame we invested so much in him, but unless he has the type of significant emotional event that changes his personna, I'm afraid he'll never be the player we all hoped he'd become.

Trade him, release him, help him, teach him??? Well folks, I think its up to him...if he gives up B-ball because its too tough, thats his call. Let him get a real job and see how tough the responsibilities are in the "real world."

 

I can really empathize with Eddie. I know how its like to have your life fall apart in an instant. Some people just need time to heal and find themselves. I wish he could use basketball as his outlet on his problems but he sees it as a job and not a game.

There is too much at stake for him. We don't know all the details yet and we probably wont get them all. My advice would be to keep things simple. Pay somebody to take care of the kid. Get rid of all those people in your life that are giving you the problems. And get some help for yourself.

The point is not that they shouldn't help him of course they should help him. But you can't say, help him find peace because he is asset, with a monetary value to your team. That's a contradiction and that was my objection. (but somehow you chose to read some subliminal point that I never made). Actually in part my statement was wrong. You can attempt to help Eddie find peace because he is an asset. But to be motivated to help him find peace because you want to protect your asset is just not logical thinking and probably would never work.

You can't do both with good results... try and help someone find peace and protect your asset are 2 different objectives on 2 different spectrums. If I want to protect my asset I do whatever it takes to help him become a better basketball player for this team. If that means getting him a little counseling so that he learns to handle the pressure and show up for every game than I do it. But in the end he is an asset and his peace isn't my main concern.

If I want to help him find peace I do whatever it takes to help him find himself and deal with his demons and I don't care if that means the guy needs to leave the league indefinitely. If that's what it takes for him to find peace than I do it without question. If finding peace for Eddie means he needs to quit the game and the lifestyle that comes with it than I help him do that. (I'm not saying it does) But if my objective is his peace than I cannot think about him as an asset. Now I will even say that the Rockets would probably like Eddie to have peace as long as his peace gets him to come back and follow the rules and practice hard and improve and play better. But not if Eddie's peace means he has to quit for good or he needs to continue to not show when he is feeling pressured than I can assure Rockets are not for that kind of peace. (Again I'm not saying that it does only that finding peace and protecting your asset or 2 different objectives that while possibly serving the same purpose of come from 2 different directions).

So now if I haven't lost you than you can answer me 1 question.
Do you agree with what I just said? If so say you do. If not disagree in a more gentlemanly manner next time, but don't say I normally don't like to bash and then bash. That makes you a basher and a stupid one at that who doesn't have the balls to admit he is basher.

Help Eddie get through this will either A: not change a thing and you lose all your investment. or B: you are able to help him through this and you have a valuable comodity to contribute to your product.

Letting Eddie continue with his immature course of decision making has only one option: A: not change a thing and you lose all your investment.

so, as a business decision, protect your fu$#ing investment old man river!

I hear with my mind and heart. One of the many imperfections I have is losing my patience with people who mock wisdom from honorable people. All of that aside, I believe I just showed you exactly why helping him would not only be a positive moral decision but also a positive business decision as well. I hope you were just tossing a wrong idea other there because it's sad to actually watch people think with their wallet... albeit, sometimes necessary.
