So does Facebook go through our phonebook? I've seen quiet a few people pop up on 'people you may know' who I only communicate with strictly through phone calls. No text. Most of these people are work partners/co-workers. I have no interest in being their "friend" or snooping through their stuff and I hope they feel the same.

I'll go ahead and be that guy.

One of the best weeks of my life was last year when I deleted my account permanently. Have not missed it one bit.

This kind of crap just skeeved me out. Zero trust with FB.

I believe they ask your permission to access your book, or maybe they have your number so they do already? Its one of the two

I wonder if these people are also whatapp users. Facebook owns this app and can link contacts this way..just a hunch.

I know Linkedin suggests contacts that I emailed maybe four or five years ago, clearly there are some kind of cookies or cross referencing that goes on.

I thought these were based on friends in common.

Was at a party with a casual work friend a few days ago. Was the first time I'd seen here in a couple of years. Wake up the next morning, check Faceboook, the casual friend is the first person that pops up under the "people you may know" feature.

Mines a mix of obvious fake/escorts/government-spy accounts and work contacts from my outlook/phone book. It is creepy though. I think it also does recommendations if they view your page.

It could have been that they just searched for you.

I dont understand how Facebook can be that dramatic to your life. It seems the only ones who have a problem with FB are the ones who put their drama out for all to see.

Facebook also uses a nifty thing called IP's. It will also use location based services if individuals have that setup. It uses any information it has collected on you and compares it to others.

If this privacy concerns you, you may want to go live off the grid and communicate with letter couriers.

Something similar happened to me. I ran into someone I hadn't seen in almost 8 years. Next thing I know he's popping up on my Facebook

To all you people that are so concerned with Facebook going thru your phonebook, what could you possibly be doing that would interest them at all? Like why do you care if they go thru your phone book?

I always thought it was based on mutual friends, or yall are from the same town, went to the same school or work at the same job.

I don't know, but at some point my Facebook newsfeed started giving me info on people I don't know. I swear over half of the updates on there are for people that I have no clue who they are.

Also, at some point it went from Facebook to some sort of Youtube Facebook hybrid.

That's what I'm thinking as well. Either FB scans my phone or the person who randomly appeared on my 'people you may know' searched for me and clicked on my profile.

I'll put on my tinfoil hat and say Facebook has your mic turned on without you knowing and can tell who you are hanging out with via voice recognition.
