CBS Sportsline: Underrated/overrated: Marbury, Stackhouse top lists

First, I am really not accounting draft position into my analysis. Not every draft has a player that is capable of being a franchise player who can lead a team single handedly to victory or furthermore, a title. Some drafts have had 2 or 3 players in them that were capable (Jordan/Hakeem). Several others have not had 1 player who ended up being close to their caliber. THe point is, draft position is all relative.

Second, on the Barkley/Hakeem issue. Whether you want to agree or not, they both had successful careers and even if they don't have the physical tools anymore, they are still capable of passing on their knowledge of what it took to win. Kind of like having a couple of extra coaches on the team.

Third, as mentioned before, with regards to Steve, I feel he is a victim of his position. Hes not a good PG and he would probably be only an average SG. Personally (and this will be somewhat controversial), I think Steve's hype is part of the reason why Rudy is no longer the coach.

Last, on Gasol. I never said Gasol wasn't perfect and he may indeed be soft. However, he is still a multi skilled player that is very productive and can help a team win. Like I said, he would make a nice 2nd option on a team, much like Brand would.

 

Ben Wallace is underrated. I've seen the numbers on the plus-minus for him while in and out of the game, and they are staggering. It isn't just the rebounds, blocks, and steals he gets. It's the disruption in transition, the smart passes, the good D.

I'm not sure where I would place him in a draft of the league, but it would be high.

If you switched Ben Wallace and Amare Stoudemire last year, who do you think would have benefited the most?

 

Let's look at some of the POSTIVE things about Francis.
*Ranks #1 on the team in points, steals and assists
*Ranks #2 in rebounds per game, despite being only 6'3"
*Saw the team win only 20 some-odd games when he was sick
*One of only 3 players in history to average 20,6 and 6 for his career
*99-00 co-rookie of the year
*First rookie in over 40 years to lead his team in points, assists and steals in one season
*First player in Franchise history to total 400 reb and 500 assts in one season
*First rookie in Franchise history to win NBA player of the week
*2 time NBA All-Star game starter
*Holds the all-time Franchise record for most assists by a rookie in one season
*Only the 7th rookie in history to average at least 15 ppg, 5 rpg and 5 apg for the season
*Only rookie in NBA history to rank within the top 5 in all 9 of the statistical categories tracked by the NBA

All this, and he's not considered good enough to play on the olympic team, he's not even given credit as one of the best in the league!

Then you all say he's overrated because he hasn't lead his team to the playoffs? If T-Mac's Magic were in the West, would McGrady have EVER been in the playoffs? NO! If Francis was in the east, would he have been within the top 5 seeds? YES! Quit using playoff experiene against the guy and give him some credit. I was look at the *********** NBA boards and most of them had Francis ranked as the 11th or 12th best player in the NBA, but then I come to the Rockets board and he's being called one of the 5 most overrated players? It's just crazy how much Francis hating is going on.

So what if the guy doesn't play PG like Jason Kidd. Does Yao play center as good as Shaq? No, but nobody's calling Yao overrated! Francis has his own style of play, and just because it doesn't fit the cookie-cutter point guard mold that all of you have come to know doesn't mean he's a bad point guard. Look back at the efficiency rankings for this past season. Francis was second only to Jason Kidd in the PG rankings, and none of you ever want to give him credit for that much. He was ahead of Marbury, he was ahead of Payton, Nash, Bibby, Parker, all of them! So give the guy credit for all the things he's done for us. Quit looking at the 2 or 3 things he hasn't done.

how about knowing how to run a fast break? how about a commitment to defense?

saying here's overrated is not hating on him, imo. we all know that he's talented. we all know his capabilities. we also all know that he can't run a fast break, does not choose to play defense, and cannot execute complex sets. i expect elite guards to be able to do those things.

he's very good.
he's not elite.

Suns

Amare gave up as many points as he scored, probably more

The west is full of good PFs, and Ben would have helped limit them.

 

Not sure Shaq still has any idea Manu is a Left-hander, the number of times Manu beat his player in the playoffs and Shaq (and others) comes over to block/stop the shot on Manu's right hand is ridiculous, time and time again, how hard is to remember he is left handed.

 

That tradeoff puts the Suns closer to the Spurs and Detroit closer to the Bucks.

Marion/Wallace/Marbury.

 

The Suns and Pistons played twice, splitting two close games.

Ben averaged 8.5 points, 15.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 3.5 steals, and 3.5 blocks

AS averaged 7.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, no assists, no steals and no blocks

 

as an exercise in whether Ben Wallace is underrated or not, I'd like to see about 100 fans and media post the names of all the players who they'd select ahead of Wallace if the NBA had a reorganization draft for one season.

 

The Suns would have been much worse.

Amare is 10 times the offensive threat that Wallace is. Without Amare they wouldn't have a post-up presence making them much worse.

And Amare's defense was never bad during the season, it was really good in the later part.

I like Codell's pick Pau. Dude has delivered and is golden with the refs. He draws fouls like crazy.

Wallace is overrated. He can't win the game. He can't stop Kobe from winning it. Boards and blocks and d. Ok, good. Not superstar.

So far, we have you down as one of the few people on the planet who'd call Ben Wallace overrated. And you probably have Gino 50 spots better than Battier, right? Just because you are glad to see a cocky white man who can jump!

Sorry but players who can't play any offense are not in the top 25 of nba players much less top 10.

Ben Wallace is overrated if anything because his man to man defense isn't nearly as good as you think.

 

If Amare is 10 times the offensive player that Ben is, then Ben is 20 times the defensive player that Amare is. lol
