Oh wow, the Niners just shot themselves in the foot. That's an absolutely insane deal for a mediocre at best QB
I don't think that number has been released yet, it might be backloaded but there is almost no way this isn't an awful contract. For reference <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>RT <a href="https://twitter.com/NFL_Stats">@NFL_Stats</a>: Kaepernick's Stats Last Season: Comp. %: 58.4 (31st) Pass Yards: 3,197 (20th) Pass TDs: 21 (17th) Passer Rating: 91.6 (10th)</p>— MurdeRussWestbrook#0 (@thatkidteejayy) <a href="https://twitter.com/thatkidteejayy/statuses/474287518783782912">June 4, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Oh trust me I'm agreeing with you in that this is a horrific contract, especially for the GMs and owners who still have to sign Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, RGIII, Andrew Luck, etc. to extensions soon. We'll see what he does with a healthier / better receiving corp but man....if that defense don't produce the 9ers are going to regret this signing real quick.
They can all ways cut him . . . take the 1 yr cap hit Rocket River That is why players gotta get all they can
overpaid! What I dont get is the Niners are good because of their defense, so why aren't they using their resources to keep that together rather then overpay for a QB that is only decent because of the protection he gets from said defense.
1. You cannot win a Super Bowl with mediocre QBs. 2. Where can you find a QB equal to or better than Colin Kaepernick?
The last two years disagrees with you He's a mediocre QB, it's not that hard to find someone better or equal to him. There's a reason why they almost never let him throw the ball, he's not a very good QB.
Joe Flacco and Russell Wilson are top 15 QBs. What QB on the market or at the bottom of draft could the Niners have gotten and allowed them to be an 11-13 win team.
Heh, Wilson is a game manager that is asked to do less than any QB other than Kap and Flacco has thrown 3 more interceptions since you posted that. Even if you could make a case for Wilson the game manager being a top 15 QB, that only says that he is slightly above average....the gap between "mediocre" and "slightly above average" isn't very great. They still had Kap under contract and they could have simply replaced him with another QB once he was gone. The reason teams like Seattle and San Francisco were good was because they used the money they saved at the QB position to beef up their defense and running games....that's how they win games. By throwing a ton of cash at the QB spot, it takes away from the spots that made them good to begin with.
Wilson is *2nd year* QB who just helped his team win the Super Bowl. He's nowhere close to peaking. I asked who could they replace him with at QB...
Just this year, Bridgewater, Carr, or Garoppolo could have been taken in the draft and been groomed to be the game manager after some foolish team overpays Kap in FA. You'd just be looking for a game manager to hand the ball off.
