I have a wireless network setup at home. My wife's Windows laptop speaks wireless. Ater installing the network about a year ago, my wife had no problems connecting to my Linksys Wireless G 2.4 GHtz Broadband Router. Last week, my wife's laptop was no longer able to connect to my router. I have no idea why.

When I "View Available Wireless Networks" from my wife's laptop 6 inches away from the router, I see 6 wireless networks. I suspect that I am able to see 5 of my surrounding neighbors wireless networks. When I select my wireless network and try to connect, it is a no-go.

I do see that I see up my wireless net without a network key (WEP). Could this be the problem?

I have a similar problem, minus the connection issue. I see several networks and I'm not sure if they're duplicates of my existing network or if my neighbors have similar wireless setups. Maybe if you delete all of the existing networks in the list and allow the computer to search for available networks, it will "refresh" your network and connect correctly. Also, you might want to power down your wireless router for about thirty seconds and power it back up.

Try the hard reset of the router by powering it down (along w/ the cable or DSL modem that you're using).

Also, if that doesn't work, manually connect the laptop to the router via an ethernet cable, and check the router settings by using your web browser (check the router instructions... for example, on netgear products, the default router address is 192.168.2.1.... and if you type that into the web browser, you'll get a log-in screen where the default info is to type "admin" for username, and "password" for password.)

    No Worries...

Iv been running into this problem with the Linksys wireless APs lately..

doing a reset of the router may fix the problem(temporarily)..sometimes, it just seems to lockup and it wont accept any connections.

Is her's the only wireless that wont connect?

Exactly, she gets his wireless connection to work elsewhere :(

I don't mind rebooting. I would rather this be a fixable problem though. Seeing that it used to work without a problem, I am wondering if my neighbors wireless network is jacking with my own.

I suppose that is a possibility.....but I doubt that is it. If that was the case, you would be able to connect to somthing...

First thing I would try.....(I had this problem with my wife's computer)...uninstall and reinstall the network card...for whatever reason, my wife's blinked out and wouldnt connect to my wireless network....totally nothing...not een a low signal...adn I knew the network was up and running and the AP was functioning cause of other machines working....so I uninstalled the network card...rebooted the machine....then did another clean restart just to be sure...and then reinstalled it ...and it worked after that...

that is the first and easiest thing to do....if that doesnt work, we move on to the next more technical step.

I forgot to mention that I connect my home PC to the Linsys broadband router. I have zero connectivity issues withmy PC. I thus deduce that the cable modem and some functionality of the router must be working.

If your wife's computer is used to connect to another network (i.e. work domain) via ethernet cable, you might want to disable that interface in the network settings so that it won't interfere with the wireless. My XP Pro computer had problems initially when I installed a wireless network at home, but now, the hardware profiles recognize which network I'm on and adjust accordingly.

An update, rebooting wireless router did not fix the problem. Whne I get around to it, I will log onto the router and look for logs to see what is up. I strongly suspect that the router's wireless capabilities have gone the way of the dodo.

    No worries,

Don't know if anyone else mentioned this, but the problem may be with your SSID, which is basically a unique name you give to your router.

When I first got my linksys, I had the same problem you did. It turns out, that all linksys routers come with the SSID set to "linksys" as defult. Well, needless to say, if all your neighbors have a linksys router, they are all probably called "linksys" too. So it may look like your computer is connecting to your router, but its actually connecting to one of your neighbors.

Try going into the router setup and renaming the SSID something unique and then set your windows wirless config to match.

Also, there is an option in the windows wirless config (i think its under advanced setup) where you can select "automatically connect to non-prefered networks". Make sure this is un-checked.

I renamed the SSID on initial install a year ago.

#1. (This assumes windows xp sp1) You see 6 networks in the connection list. Make sure that in the bottom box it's not trying to connect to one of the other networks before it connects to yours. in this case it'd be locking onto their signal but be unable to authenticate.

#2. WEP is the most likely problem, but it can take several forms. Make sure that the key length (64 bit or 128 bit) are matched and make sure that you're not confusing the passphrase generating the key with the key itself.

#3. Additionally, you could have the MAC filter enabled, if this is the case, disable it.

#4. This might seem silly, but some people do it and don't realize - go to the network control panel and make sure that you don't have a network bridge enbable using that connection.

#5. If this doesn't work, disable all connections but the relevant wireless connection, then open properties for the connecton and select the checkbox "Show Icon Notification When Connected". This will give you a constant icon that'll give you information about the machine's ability to communicate with the router, and will prevent you from becoming confused by dial-up connectors or the like.

If you are running an OS other than XP Sp1 post what it is, as that will alter the remedy.
