Anyone catch this last week? That Little Ol' Band from Texas is still sounding pretty good. I saw them in concert in a radio station-sponsored suite (free) at the Houston Summit years ago. That was interesting watching a concert from a suite but that is not the place to be for a concert. I felt lame sitting up there for a concert...instead of in with the crowd. While they definitely have some trademark classic hits, I couldn't tell you of any music that caught on as well that they produced since those hits. But, that may just be me not really keeping up with them. Does anyone out there actually have ZZ Top at the top of their favorite bands list? Just curious. They seem to have a good following to keep going all these years. It seems like it would be a good ole Southern tour if they toured with Lynard Skynard but it might start a new civil war .
ZZ Top is my mom's favorite band. I saw it was coming on, called her, made her DVR it, and DVRed it myself, so I could talk to her about it later. I was actually really disappointed in it. It easily could have been a longer program. The music was good - they covered the bases - I would have been mad if they played fewer songs, and I probably would have been mad if they played any more. I totally wanted to hear more stories - since that's the freakin' title of the show STORYTELLERS. And I definitely didn't care about the couple renewing their vows - while it was cool they got to do that with their favorite band in front of everyone, on national TV, it was seriously a waste of like 10 minutes IMO.
ZZ Top is not my favorite band, but when the old stuff (La Grange, Tush era) comes on, it reminds me of my youth in Texas. Mrs. rimrocker calls it "a little homecooking." Every few years, I get on a Top kick for a few weeks. And... La Grange is one of the all-time great rock songs. It's just about perfect.
Exactly how I feel. I grew up on ZZ Top. I consider myself a fan, but frankly, the last album I bought was Eliminator. Plus, being a native Houstonian, I guess there's that whole Houston connection as well. If there's a sweeter guitar riff than the opening riff to Just Got Paid, I'd like to hear it. Meggo, I agree about the renewing vows thing. If the show was 2 hours, it would've been cute, but they could've played 2 more songs in that time. EDIT: I never really liked how they made a mockery of themselves during the whole Eliminator video era of the early 80’s. I think a lot of younger fans only know them for that era and consequently don’t really appreciate what great musicians they were/are - or the utter brilliance of their pre-Eliminator material.
Wrong wrong wrong. Eliminator gave us those brilliant videos. I mean Legs? Gimme all your loving? Sharp dressed Man? Velcro Fly?!? Sheer brilliance on film.
I agree with that... they hit mega-success during that timeframe, but some of their "hits" sound dated in a not favorable 80's way. I can't stand "Rough Boy."
Here's a little something I learned about sheer brilliance on film from the storytellers show... The Sharp Dressed Man video was ultimately orchestrated by a homeless guy who was sitting on the corner watching the production going on at the time, and ran his mouth to the band members and told them to do the complete opposite of what they had been doing until that point.
rs had a blurb a few months about them recording new stuff with rick rubin and that the black keys were recording with them. sign me the freak up.
Someone should hunt that homeless guy down and terminate with extreme prejudice. They lost the rest of their soul on that album....
El Loco sucked too. Saw that concert in person, lucky to have survived. 8 drunken/stoned fools hauling ass down the shoulder of I45 in the back of a raggedy old van. There were no seats in the back on the van, we were sitting in lawn chairs and on top of beer coolers, flying around in there every time the driver made a turn. Almost started a riot at burger king on the way down....the list of insanity goes on and on.
