I want to surprise my wife with a nice little vacation to celebrate 10 years together, but I need some help. I would like to get a nice hotel room (maybe with a jacuzzi tub) in either Galveston or Kemah. We plan on going to the boardwalk for at least one day but i don't have a problem with driving in to Kemah from the isle. Anybody have any experiences with this and can make suggestions on where/where not to stay?
South Shore Harbor Resort is really close to Kemah, in League City. I know it's not Galveston, but I'm sure it's nice. http://www.sshr.com/
You're better off going go Galveston and driving to Kemah. The boardwalk will keep you busy for half a day, tops. Just drive up and down the seawall. Summer season doesn't start for about a month, so there should be plenty of rooms available http://www.galveston.com/ You can pretty much tell from the seawall what the good and bad hotels are. The San Luis is the nicest, most expensive hotel. The Hilton, Ramada, and La Quinta are also very good. I've never been to Gaido's or the Seahorse, but they look like dumps. Moody Gardens is a good hotel, but it's way off in the boonies. I'd rather have a room on the beach and drive to Moody Gardens rather than the other way around, but that's just me. The less expensive hotels are along 61st, but are still pretty good. My wife and I stayed at a decent motel (can't remember what it was called) at the intersection of 61st and I45 for about 40 bucks per night. The Victorian and Casa Del Mar are condos, so they'll have kitchenettes if you don't feel like eating out every night.
If you need a classy place to stay in Galveston, try: The Tremont House: A Wyndham Historic Hotel The wife and I stayed there the day before our recent cruise and it is NICE. 14 foot ceilings, bathroom towel warmers. The works.
http://www.harborhousepier21.com/ I was really impressed with the Harbor House in Galveston. Just a very unique alternative to your typical hotel in Galveston. The suites are really well done, and relatively inexpensive. It's also across the street from the Strand. Check the site out.
Damn, right smack in the middle of summer. Just remember that it's OK to drive over 25 mph on the seawall and you'll be fine...
I recommend the San Luis, it's been a while since I've been there, but I remember it being really nice.
If you want a classy place in Kemah or Galveston..... Try New Orleans, don't take your wife to Kemah or Galveston for your 10 year anniversary....you have to love her more than that. DD
Actually she was the one that requested Kemah/Galveston. I considered NO but she isn't real fond of going there.
If you like Kemah (I prefer it, but I work on the island and as such see a lot of the places you wouldn't take your wife), there is a bed and breakfast called A White Texas Pelican (http://awhitetexaspelican.com/). My grandmother and father have both stayed there and absolutely RAVED afterwards. I just looked at the website and they also have wireless internet access so you won't even be away from CF.net while there!
10 Years? Dude, go ahead and spring for the cruise ship run out of Galveston. Take it from an old married guy, she will be expecting something nice even if she says" Oh we can't afford it" The fact is, the rooms are small and you don't make a lot of good ports but cruises carry an aura that make the right impact. Anniverseries and birthdays that end in 0's are huge for women.
Agreed !! I took my wife to Lake Tahoe for a week during the summer, sans kiddos. It was glorious..... DD
