Right! I always knew you could use them, but most of the time I play single player, and it didn't seem to matter. When I've played these games online, I've usually gotten waxed, no doubt because I don't know the keystroke commands. I need to get over that, and just figure that stuff out. Part of my problem is that I play different games, and they so often, natch, have different keyboard commands. DrDunker, I definitely agree about the strategy being much more complex and "realistic." That's really something I like. Guess I'll have to put some more effort into remembering those keys.
I enjoyed the previous total war, but stopped playing to go back to back to Civ3 with the conquests expansion. I'm still addicted to that game. I stink at Civ3. I don't know why but I can't beat anything above warlord level. Anyway the game is so much fun, and I watching the history international channel or history channel programs about various civilizations and wars I can't help but get in the mood to play civ3. all over again.
Thanks for the reviews guys. I finally found a site that actually had a demo that worked error free on my computer. From what i saw in the tutorial battle, and the demo battle, i came away impressed. The details are amazing and watching the giant elephants throw soldiers around was quite entertaining. Some points mentioned earlier such as battle strategy and the political/financial aspect of the game has swayed me toward buying it. I'm hoping to pick it up tomorrow or Friday. I can't wait to get started.
Just not my kind of game. You might love it though! I like real time strategy games, but this one seemed to slow for my taste. Plus, I like the classic real time strategy games like C&C and Starcraft.
Well i bought the game but i can't play it. Everytime the Prolouge loads up, right when the first battle is about to begin the game crashes. It's done it 5 times in a row; and i have no clue why.
A Question for those who already have installed the game. When exactly does it ask you for the game cd key? I installed it and was never asked once for it. Just curious, perhaps that is why i'm unable to get it to work. Also in the process of installing the 2nd windows service pack. Never got around to that until now.
This game also spawned one of my new favorite shows, Decisive Battles. The host is the same guy who played Captain Speirs in Band of Brothers.
So, in your mind..... Is ROme: Total War as fun as the AOE games? I want a replacement, and this game looks fantastic.
It asks for the CD key when you want to go online I believe. I don't know, that part failed for me, so I haven't tried it again. I don't think I entered a CD key anywhere else, but I could be mistaken. Uprising : this is AoE with more brains. It's not as "sandbox" as AoE was.
Thanks DOD. I'm about ready to take it back. I've tried everything, installing the Windows XP service pack 2, making sure all drivers were updated, reinstalling the actual software, and adjusting the video settings to the bare mininmum and i still get booted right when the Battle screen is about to load in the Prologue. I checked the totalwar website and their tech forum is a joke; sent off an email and not looking at getting a response for at least 24 to 72 hours, probably longer due to the high volume of problems others seem to be having. I've never had any problems running any other game, Command and Conquer Generals and Civilization 3 both ran fine; so i don't know. I've got a 1.7ghz processer, 512 RAM and plenty of hard drive space. I'm stumped
JPM, did you try to uninstall it and re-install it? I don't know if that would help or not, but I had one game that I had to do that with, and it started working again. Are you going to get a refund or just exchange it? I know the anticipation to play a good game, and you definitely seemed excited about this game. That would suck for you to have to do without it.
I'd try this as well. You may want to disable any firewall as you install as well. Leave it disabled when you try to run the software, too. If that works, then turn the firewall back on and see if it still works.
I tried to unistall it and reinstall it twice. It still didn't work. I turned off the firewall that the 2nd service pack put onto my computer but it still didn't work. I've tried to do an imperial campaign and historical battle. Every single time the little red bar gets to 100%, then it sits there for a good 15 seconds before crashing to the desktop. It just won't let me into the battle screen. I don't want to take it back but if i can't get it to work within a week i'll end up taking it back for a full refund. I'm hoping the tech support people can figure it out. I sent them a copy of the DxDiag.txt
I have the most up to date drivers according to the Video card properties; and didn't see any new driver updates in the "Windows Update" screen. Card name: NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro Manufacturer: NVIDIA Chip type: RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_002D&SUBSYS_02211043&REV_15 Display Memory: 32.0 MB Current Mode: 800 x 600 (32 bit) (75Hz) Monitor: KDS Visula Sensations VS-77/VS-70/VS-7p Monitor Max Res: 1280,1024 Driver Name: nv4_disp.dll Driver Version: 6.14.0010.4523 (English) DDI Version: 7 Driver Attributes: Final Retail Driver Date/Size: 7/28/2003 14:19:00, 3902603 bytes
JPM0016, I would consider getting a new video card. The TNT is very out of date, compared to what's on the market now. You could get a new card for under a hundred dollars, probably well under, that would blow your current one away. I would consider doing that whether you keep the game or not, imo.
Yeah i've thought about it, just don't have the funds to go out and buy one right now. The HP i've got is probably 2 or so years old. I've been customizing various computers helping my Aunt pick a new one out and its amazing how obsolete my has become. Didn't think i would have any problems with this game since Command and Conquers Generals worked so well. Oh well; would you or anyone else happen to know if there are some very inexpensive graphic cards out there? Just looking around on Best Buy.com and they range from 80 bucks to 150; just a little outta my range right now.
