Not sure if anyone here has any experience framing things, but my wife and I are looking to frame an object that is about the size of a small book that is about an inch and a half deep. I've seen plenty of information on how to frame a picture where the glass, matting and picture are all laying on top of each other. How do I frame something that is not flat. I've seen some frames at local stores here in Clear Lake where it looks like there is a box behind the glass that contains the object....but I have no clue where to start in regards to buying this "box" or constructing it. Just curious if anyone else had done any sort of framing along these lines.

    Thanks for any help!!!

You can set a matting front into a deeper frame. So the matting would be lodged in the frame itself, but the depth of the artwork would be accounted for by the frame itself. ANd then if you want glass, it rests on top of the art/matting, and into the front of the frame. What looks like a bos is actually just a deep frame front crested or matted.

Or you can deep set the matting into a thick frame, and set the glass to the front. This gives the appearance of the picture itself perring out from a depth.

I wish I could draw diagrams here.

If you go to Hobby Lobby you should get some good info. I believe they do that stuff there.

We've seen some examples in one of the local curio shops and it seems like there is some sort of box protruding away from the level of where you would expect matting and a picture to be. I did not really check thickness of the frame...that might be a big piece of the illusion of a box. Unfortunately, the back of the frame was wrapped in that brown paper and you couldn't really see exactly how the "box" was designed.

    Thanks for your input, though!!!:)
