How long will it be after DX10 and vista comes out before you have to have it to play the latest games? I don;t have much long to use the evga step program to get the 8800GTS card which supports dx10.

not a gamer, but I expect my audio software will be good to go for XP through all updates for the next two or three years. I bet a couple of years before games require it, but with the new unloading of graphics to the graphics card for Vista maybe not. Most of my software isn't graphics intensive, but I have one 3D design program that is a bear.

But if you have the ability to upgrade your card to Vista support now I would do it. I'm currently looking for a card that is silent that supports two monitor outs as well as a TV output and I'm not considering anything that doesn't support Vista.

Well i was using my laptop for gaming before I built this machine so I am no hardware genius but from what I understand DirectX 10 will come with Vista or shortly after. The only current cards available for that are the Geforce 8800 series just release 11-8. If I was not in a time crunch due to the step up program I would wait till I found a game I wanted to play that required DX10 then upgrade.

As I understand things DirectX 9.0L will allow DirectX 10 software to run on XP.

I didn't know that there were not more DirectX 10 compatible cards available now. I was looking at "Vista" compatibility while doing my research and there are plenty that state support (although not solutions for what I require).

I would think it is pretty scary to upgrade to the first card out of the gate. I'm not sure it would be worth the savings. I know I wouldn't do it...

    Regards,
    Brock

    3 months tops.

600 bucks is a hefty price, but the benchmarks have been indicating that it's on par with a 2 7800gtx on SLI. In other words, DX9 or DX10 you're getting your money's worth.

If I were you, I'd play my games at a slightly lower resolution and wait the couple months for Vista to come out (if you can). It's supposedly on time with it's latest launch date. By then, you also get to see what ATI has to offer.

Yeah plus if I upgrade soon with EVGA I get the full purchase price of my 7950GT taken off the price of the 8800 card.

Nope, DX10 will only run on Vista. XP will NOT support it.

As for graphics cards, that one sounds good. I'm not sure what I'm going to upgrade to yet. I'm about to upgrade....again. :( Cause I bought a Intel Core 2 duo but a ****y mother board that has AGP so I can still use my old 6800GT card.

What I said was a little different, and I'm no gamer so I will most definately be the one learning here...

But as I understand it applications that utilize DirectX 10 will still run on XP using DirectX 9.0L. Of course they won't enjoy the benefits of DirectX X in conjunction with Vista, but they will still be compatible.

This will effect you gamers a lot more than it will effect me, but I stay away from the cutting edge as far as computers and digital devices are concerned. I prefer for things to get sorted a bit, then see what is working well and what isn't. I'm not planning on upgrading to Vista for at least a couple of years.
