Hi guys, Some of you might know I'm making a trip to Nigeria. I would like to get a power adapter for my laptop so I can use on the plane trip and also for Africa. I have no idea what the power over there is - if it's like Europe or Asia or whatever. Anyone have any idea the power type and also what is a good adapter? Thanks.
Most adapters adjust to the 220V power used in the rest of the world but the bigger problem is the plugs. In Asia I noticed several different plugs used, even in the same country, and they were different enough that it wasn't like plugging a two prong US plug into a three prong outlet. If you look on your current addaptor it should say that it can take an input from 100V to 240V so you should be OK otherwise you can buy laptop adaptors from an electronic store. The harder part will be the plug and you might have to wait to get to Nigeria to see what sort of outlets they have and buy a new plug there.
Two things... 1) Airplanes are weird. Some have normal power outlets. Some have special airplane power outlets. I've noticed that most American companies use the special airplane power outlet. In general, it's not worth it to pay big money for something you won't need much. I rather invest in an extra battery. 2) As mentioned above, you should already be rated for 240V. That's cause most laptop manufacturers use the same power system for world wide operation. In that case, all you are worried about is being able to plug in the power. You are NOT concerned about "transforming" the voltage from 220 to 110 etc cause your laptop will take care of that for you. Other appliances may require an expensive transformer. In that case, investment in a "universal adapter" is all you need. They are about $20. Great. Thanks for the response. I did further digging and it seems that Lufthansa has regular type outlets for every seat. So I'll be okay from that perspective. That's good advice that I can wait until I get to Nigeria to figure out what they use there. I might also call there and ask one of the guys. Once again, thanks a lot.
In Nigeria, they use UK style plugs. Just buy a US to UK adaptor and you will be fine. As the other posters have advised, your laptop is almost certainly capable of accepting 220 - 240V, which is what they deliver in Nigeria. You can check this by looking closely at your power adaptor. It should say something like "Input 110V - 240V, 50 - 60Hz" Good luck
A friend of mine from Hong Kong gave me a universal adapter several years ago. The thing is great an no matter where on Earth I am, it contorts to fit any plug.
