So I've entered intramural basketball for next year and I need some help. I just need a few ideas on simple plays I could use to help out my team. Basically my team is made up one guard and 4 forwards. Anything such as team drills etc... would be helpful.
fundamentals go a long way. there are tons of IM teams out there who underestimate TEAM ball. i'm talking about setting hundreds of picks whether they're asked for or not... your guard should practice drive-and-dish with forwards on the wings and at the top of the key... your forwards should practice back-picking to free up a man to cut inside... and then practice rebounding, i find that nothing kills an opponent's momentum than having 3 or 4 shots every possession (if needed). have your guard shoot free throws or mid-range jumpshots, intentionally missing... and have the forwards practice boxing out. not many people box out soundly.
Screen, screen, screen, screen, screen. If you keep screening and rolling, screening and flaring out etc. You will eventually get a good shot if not a layup. IM teams in my experience havent been able to play defense for that long. They will eventually break down and get beat off the dribble or not getting through a screen.
dude, it's intramural basketball, what the **** are you thinking trying to run plays? my favorite intramural game ever was when we lost 17-68,
Ok, now that I have the plan settled (mass screens) what should I call the play(s)? Because I can't just say screen! or the other team will find out what we're up to!
Listen, you dont need to call out anything, any defenders teamates will let their teamate know a screen is coming from their right or left. Most will probably get through the first couple of screens, but after awhile of screening and re-screening the defense is going to get lazy. More than likely, they will start switching picks, thats where your roller will be open, while their switching your defender will be open. Another thing, make sure your players screen for others without the ball as well, like a cross screen on the blocks, just dont set ball screens all the time. In IM I wouldnt be to worried about plays, just go out and play.
My sentiments exactly.. I've never seen anyone actually call organized plays in IM bball. The teams that win are the teams with flat out better players, not because of some coaching genius. But I suppose you can pretend this is march madness and go all out. So run a Princeton offense with a shifting 1-3-1 and box-1 zone. That'll throw em off. You can be the guy that calls out the shifts.
don't call plays at all. just use the basic schemes and strategies everyone discussed... on defense, you can have multiple "formations" and call them out if you want. learn about the 1-3-1 zone. if you want to switch to man-defense, just call out "MAN". you can't ever hide a defensive scheme. it is what it is. if you really want to scream out stuff, do some bill cosby lines just for intimidation. on offense, just remember to pick all the time, box out and rebound, and if you need someone to cut or go backdoor, then make up names for those moves. keep the offense moving, picking, cutting, and eventually something will open. need a cut? "EMO" need a backdoor? "BROKEBACK" need someone to post up? "HIGH" or "LOW" pretty much, spend less time designing plays (which will usually just fail or players will forget), and more time just doing basic passing drills. scrimmage together as much as possible so you can get a feel for passing.
If you are at UT, just iso and take the ball to the hole, the refs will call a foul every time, SERIOUSLY, i think they are graded on how many fouls they call.
haha no kidding, too bad all I can do is shoot jump shots. But the few times that I did drive to the basket, sure enough I got foul calls. I wish I'd figured this out earlier.
What worked for my team was just loads of practice and good communication. We just pretty much had 2 plays which we practiced over and over and over again. And practice playing pick ups with your team. and like pretty much pro athletes say "just go out and have fun" and don't choke eachother like my other team did after a loss ^_^
having actual plays will be the least of your problems. just wait till people whine about playing time.
