Lockhart Mayor Ray Sanders met his counterpart from China, Mayor Xu Wenguang. The two announced a trade partnership between the two cities. Sanders thinks the new relationship with the Chinese city of Shangyu will benefit Lockhart and the entire region. "I think it’s going to be a benefit for the entire region, because a city of that size their going to want trade delegations that will probably come out of Austin and San Marcos," Sanders said. Shangyu is in Southeast China near the island of Taiwan. It has a population of 1 million, compared to Lockhart's 13,000. Lockhart? How did that ever happen?
