    Although, I think I MAY have an explanation for this.

    In my International Business class, I read an article about how when Sesame Street moved to the Israel/Palestine area, they had to make two shows. One for the Jews and one for the Muslims. The voices, characters, attitudes and everything were different. It's possible that Bert has become a sort of symbol, or perhaps he is outspoken on the show, for the anti-Israel cause. I'm not certain, but this is a possibility.

    I believe that the Sesame Street producers originally came up with one show for the two groups of people, but it did not test well (or something along those lines). As I recall, it had Jewish children playing with Palestinian children, and neither side was amused.

    I'll see if I can find it and maybe we'll find out more . . . But this reminds me of the hilarious Sesame Street spoof on Family Guy. "I wish you wouldn't drink so much Bert . . . yeah, well I wish you wouldn't eat ****ing cookies in the g*ddamned bed!!"
