I heard a caller ask about him on 610 this morning . I remember him with the hornets but not much else. He was somewhat successful. He is a disciplinarian. Anyone have anything else on him? He was a BIG MAN in the league . . may help Yao Rocket River
Believe you're referring to Dave Cowens. He was an undersized, but extremely tenacious center for the Celtics. Believe his last job was GS. I'm not an expert on his coaching prowness.
He coached Charlotte before Silas too over. A bit of a hardass if I am not mistaken. Had two good years in Charlotte then followed that up with 3 bad years (1 with Charlotte and 2 with G.S.).
His experience at GSW seemed to support the perception that he works well with an experienced team (as he had in CHA) but was not very good working with young players (as he had in GSW). Folks in GSW questioned his rotations and by the end they were pretty anxious to see him go. 'Course, that isn't very much of a sample size and GSW has gone through a number of coaches (until finding a good one in Musselman). But he certainly would not bring the "big splash" that the Rockets hope to make with the hiring...
I like him for his intensity alone-- not as Head coach but may as an Assistant working with the frontline.
Agreed, probably not a good idea as head coach. But OMG, I just had a vision of Cowens as an assistant scrimmaging against Griffin and Taylor in practice....their worst nightmare....
dave is rumored to be talking with the knicks about being an assistant there. sorry, no link because it was on local TV in NY.
