That the damn shame of it with Bonds. He was absolutely a HOF before he roided up. Had all of the talent in the world. That whole era was very shortsighted of baseball. Everybody knew but the strike scared the crap out of them. Damn that strike. We probably would've won that year.
But, Bagwell would more than likely not have won the MVP, since he would have been out August and September.
We may have to do that this year. But this kid is young and has his entire future ahead of him. Even though a couple of you attacked me for suggesting it has not been adequately discussed moving Yordan to first base, in the future it seems that he should be our primary first baseman. How hard is it to play first base? Even Tyler White played a decent first base. If or when we advance to the WS this year and if Yordan tearing it up against AL opponents in the first part of the playoffs, you think we are going to sit him on the bench against LA or whoever advances from the NL to the WS? It would be agonizing for me to see him over there on the bench waiting for one possible at bat when we could get 4 or 5 at bats from him each game if we had a position for him to play. If anyone has some video of him playing first base I would love to see it. Yuli is getting older. I am not sure how much longer he is under contract for us but if Yordan is able to be our primary first baseman then Yuli could be our Marwin Gonzalez.
Pretty sure every team with a great DH has gone through a version of this angst. Brantley would also be a DH on a lot of AL teams... but they’re optimizing the lineup and defense with him in LF as opposed to Yordan. This Astros lineup should be able to generate enough runs in any ballpark, provided everybody is healthy.
Off-season working with Bagwell and Yuli could probably make him at least passable at first for the 10-15 NL games.
Has anyone gotten any feedback from Dodger fans about how they feel, about how the trade worked out? Is it like “water under the bridge”, much like most Astros fans were pretty calm when JD Martinez became an all world DH after he got to Toronto, Arizona, and Boston? Which is albeit interesting that Toronto was good when JD Martinez got there, then it got bad. Arizona was a title contender when JD got there, now they are in a rebuilding mode. Boston looked like they were going to be a dynasty, now it’s up in the air if they will even make the playoffs? I mean Josh Fields did help them in the regular season and during the playoffs? It’s just he got tagged for a few runs by the Astros. And now Alvarez is treading ground never before seen in MLB, he’s had a similar start to his career as Pujols... Luhnow has hit some grand slams on the trade front, the Jarred Cosart trade showered Houston with reward year after year! The Alvarez trade is looking Jeff Bagwellian-like... Verlander, Cole, Greinke... Man these are trades that infuse valuable youth or established foundation veterans into the team.
