Yordan Alvarez (finally) called up

They try to put it just out of his reach on the corner or bust him inside with a fastball. He adjusted in the minors and likely adjusts in the big leagues as well. He is a very bright guy.

 

If that's the criteria, then they are also on alert when Mayfield is batting because I have seen them throw him breaking pitches in the dirt.

I didn't see the last game. I just saw that he walked 3 times. Was he intentionally walked or were they all earned? His OBP is nuts.

 

Did a good job of taking pitches. The only time they may have thought about the intentional walk, the pitcher struck him out. Clearly wasn't intimidated by Yordan.

Alvarez is about 4 standard deviations less likely to receive a pitch in the heart of the zone than the average Astro. For someone not intimidating, one would think pitchers would challenge him like they do Kemp and Mayfield. Bregman gets challenged about twice as often in the heart of the zone.

Small sample size, but data does not support that pitchers are clearly not intimidated as the data suggests the opposite.

 

Just throwing some stuff out: Yordan's seen all of 60 pitches in MLB. 29 were strikes. The average MLB pitcher throws strikes 62% of the time (from what I saw on 5-old-data, I would venture to guess that's changed in the past few years? Find updated stuff if you can, for fun). We would also have to look at who those pitchers were and how often they throw strikes to anyone, so there's that. He's been up with men on 6 times, and bases empty 8 times, so that's not playing into it much either.

Maybe "afraid" is a bad word..."careful" is a better one?

It's pretty much a given now that if he hits the ball, it's going to be hard. He just hit the crap out of the ball.

 

The hype is out of control. Just give us the ring.

 

Have to keep reminding myself SSS, but he’s showing every sign of being a guy who will hit at an elite level in this league.

 

This is exactly the kind of GARM-level-wrong that should be killed with napalm.

He sends balls the opposite way like nothing,they don't even have to be elevated.

His power grade was only a 55, which seems absurdly conservative to me.

I'll say this at the risk of being banned...but remember when Ty White hit .556 with 3 dingers and 9 RBI his first week in the bigs and won PotW? I know they're completely different players, but let's not get too excited yet.
