Why do women get to 'take a break' or 'take a sabbatical'?

I've seen this time and again and it's overwhelmingly women who take it. Why is this OK in today's complete equality climate? I'm not saying I have an opinion either way, just curious on the feedback.

I don't know that women actually do get to take "sabbaticals" all that much more often unless you mean "pushing out a damned baby to keep our dumbass species going" .

To the extent they do - I'd say getting paid way less than men for the same work, glass ceiling etc is probably a way bigger deal

Once upon a time, my old company gave out sabbaticals. Both men and women took them. I darn sure took six weeks of paid time off. Actually I chose to take five weeks with one week of extra pay.

Michael Jordan took a sabbatical and came
back to win 3 more championships. Sometimes a break is good for your career.

If you’re asking about maternity, that’s because we as a society expect women to raise the children and child care costs a lot.

I don't think it's wise to conflate "take a break" or "sabbatical" with the phenomenon of women leaving the workforce to tend to their families or raise children.

In terms of taking breaks or sabbaticals for the f*** of it, men and women don't really differ there.

My sample size isn't large enough, but the only American I know who has taken a sabbatical was a guy.

I don’t know of any women taking sabbaticals.

Are you sure you are not talking about having a child?

Gotta join the chorus -- I don't know of anyone taking a sabbatical. Do you live in America?

Also on a side note, I keep hearing "complete equality climate", however it isn't a complete equality climate.

Women usually are still the primary care takers of children which is an enormous responsibility. Often times women are still more likely to clean and cook and do family chores. Women are far more likely to be victims of sexual assault than men and still face sexual harassment and domestic abuse.

What has happened in a lot of cases is that women are still doing all of the traditional female roles that they did 40 years ago but ALSO are having to work outside the home.

I know of some people that have taken sabbaticals. However they were all either post college kids or very wealthy peers of mine, and they were all men.

I have known a couple of women that quit their jobs to tend to their family, after nannies and day care were not cutting it..... they had family issues and sacrificed their jobs to fix the issues at home. They certainly were not rewarded for it and their jobs were not there when/if they wanted to return.
