Exactly, hard to be better when the game is rigged against you. NBA refs have more sway over a game than anyone else, including star players.

 

Well, there’s big difference between not getting star calls and getting called for phantom fouls.

Kellerman’s solution is only valid for the former, while most of us are complaining about the latter. 3 fouls in the first quarter can really affect your aggressive level throughout the rest of the game.

And most importantly, can’t knock down shots if you are fouled out, can you?

Gets called for charges being aggressive and doesnt get fouls behind the 3 point line.

Get called for petty touch fouls on defense while getting hammered on offense.

It's a tired stupid stance that lacks insight and appeases the masses who dont actually pay attention to the intricacies of the game.

Hard to play better when you're on the bench in foul trouble.

 

Kellerman is missing the point when an official with some reason handicaps a player's game by putting them if foul trouble in the first quarter. Harden couldn't play defense because he knew the ref was waiting to call a foul on him. So, he backs off...Lakers get easier shots at the bucket. So, if the ref can't call the fouls on his defense, then comes the phantom offensive fouls. When Harden received his fourth foul in the second half, it became evident that LeBron's aim was to foul Harden out by having his team mates do switches that left Harden defending LeBron. LeBron then hammered Harden into the paint trying to get a foul called on Harden. That is what CP3 and Harden are complaining about...being taken away from playing their game because a ref has a vendetta against you. Harden only had 7 foul attempts last night. And as Harden thought, if he drove into the paint he would be called for a foul, and he was. Ref. Scott Fisher took Harden's game away from him...that is not the job of a ref. His job is to officiate, not to determine the tempo or outcome of a game. Kellerman, doesn't get it.

 

This made me hate Kellerman. You're not denying the issue, just put a blindfold and play thru it.

This is a REALLY IMPORTANT POINT that the media and fans will twist for their purposes.

Not getting star calls is a very different debate than phantom fouls, or as Chris Webber called them, 'anticipated fouls'. The phantom fouls last night kept Capela on the bench for stretches and got Harden and Paul in foul trouble that prevented them from actually playing defense. Phantom fouls can really disrupt the flow of a game and a team's options for dealing with them.

When superstar fouls aren't being called, you adjust. Play through the contact, change your shot selection, move the ball more, whatever.

When phantom fouls are being called - what do you do? Stay away from the other team? Avoid all contact? Can't play like that. 100% ref-influenced basketball.

Casual fans on Twitter and such are used to complaining about Harden's superstar fouls, so they aren't understanding the real discussion and beef with Scott Foster.
