Trump is a liar and outrageous, but he is pretty much in line with the Republican Party as it actually exists. Granted he is embarrassing to the traditional GOP types folks who engage in more polite dog whistling, public relation nice speak while pushing mostly the same policies.. This is what happens when you create your own facts with Fox Fake News for a generation to convince little guys to continually reduce taxes on the wealthy to create trickle down, while taking away government services. busting unions to lower wages, do corporate good job killing trade treaties (with help from Clinton/corporate triangulators,) blame it on minorities and immigrants, trash science if it disagrees with short term corporate profits etc.
You have that the other way round mate. Trump is telling the truth and the liberals are the ones creating their own facts. Apparently, liberals are too stupid to self-examine who to get their news from even after the MSM got the election coverage oh so wrong.
So it's too late to expect that move towards the center that we kept hearing about during the primaries and election?
No, I don't really think so. Many of Trump's attitudes do more align with Republicans than Democrats, but I think the way he differs from other Republicans is more than just lipstick. Normal Republicans don't have a sociopathic amoralism when it comes to policymaking, nor do they have Trump's disdain for the Constitutional order and government process. They now find themselves conceding to these things because of their deal with the devil, but they wouldn't be doing things like this without someone like Trump (or maybe Cruz) in charge. I think it's a bit counterproductive to lump them all together and say 'you're all like Trump!' I need Republicans to see the error of their ways and repent from the Trump presidency. They can't do that if the country won't give them any space to disassociate themselves.
With a GOP Congress looking to reign in spending and Trump looking to do the opposite (infrastructure, tax cuts, cheaper and better insurance than ACA, etc) this will be one side's Waterloo by 2018. We've been dicking around with two wars of choice and the consequences of not planning for the peace while dicking around with entitlements in the face of a large demographic set to retire. Better get your popcorn ready.
