Anybody notice that Trump Trade War started with steel and aluminum, but the business/investing new channels are touting this trade war as primarily an exercise to get China to respect our IP rights?

the same Sen Ron Johnson from WI,

who had just returned from a Goodwill tour---consisting entirely of US Republican lawmakers---
to Russia, during which the Russian media mocked them as being suckers.

Suspect johnson has to hear from Wisconsin farmers that may have voted for trump and are now paying for it... hopefully farmers nationwide learned and will go vote in November.

Here's the question, can we even back off at this point, knowing what that will do to our negotiation strengths down the road?

Yeah, could have told them that.

We can. The importance is coming to a deal. No matter what Trump will spin it as a win. Going after our allies was the real mistake.

Like you mean, other countries might figure out Trump is an easily manipulated, impatient clown, who can't understand complex issues or how to play a long game?

Oh no, better keep that one under wraps - let the tariffs continue!

trump appears to showing his hands that the tariffs war w China may not be trending the way he had wanted

Before today, the US dollar was trading at an 1-yr high; conversely the Chinese Yuan was trading at an 1-yr low. this currency trend works against what Trump want to see,
    • from the perspective of the US demand for Chinese imports, due to a weaker Chinese Yuan, the prices of Chinese imports to US have not gone up
    • on the flip side, to the Chinese demand for US goods, due to a stronger US dollar, the prices of US imports to China have gone up
Yesterday, Trump's appointed Fed Chairman, Powell, testified in Congress that Fed will be raising the interest rate gradually for the balance of 2018. all things being equal, this will have the effect of strengthening the US dollar even more.

In an interview with CNBC this AM, Trump said a strong dollar “puts us at a disadvantage,” adding that the Chinese yuan “has been dropping like a rock.”

Trump was also unhappy about the Fed’s monetary tightening, noting he was concerned about its potential impact on the U.S. economy and American competitiveness. (note, this is the same double-talker who had crucified the previous Fed Chair, Janet Yellen, for making the US dollar weaker [IMG] [IMG])

Is the dotard attempt to bully the independence of another Gov't entity,

a la Trump telling the then-FBI Director Comey to look the other way on Gen Michael Flynn ?

The White House later did damage control after the Trump bomb, saying the president respects the Fed’s independence and is not interfering with its policy decisions.

within the hour, the former Dallas Federal Reserve President came to the defense of the current Fed Chairman

Former Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher told CNBC that Trump is out of line.

“One of the hallmarks of our great American economy is preserving the independence of the Federal Reserve.
No president should interfere with the workings of the Fed,” Fisher said. “Were I Chairman Powell,
I would ignore the president and do my job and I am confident he will do just that.”

A resounding FU to Trump heard around the world, take that dotard !

Trump wants control of the economy. What's wrong with that? I forgot what do they call people who want to manipulate and control their economy? There is a word for it but I can't put my tongue on it.

for a export-dominated economy such as China, when one of its largest trading partners levies additional tariffs on all of its exports, all other things being equal, this has the effect of weakening the Chinese currency further, the opposite of want Traitor Trump wants to see

    economically speaking, Traitor Trump is
    [IMG]
who knew that trade war can be so complicated, as all economic activities are inter-related.

Last week the U.S. launched a trade war with China revealing a list of tariffs it could slap on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods.
Today President Trump says he is willing to put tariffs on all $505 billion of Chinese goods imported into the U.S.

Insofar as the trade war, China has 4 powerful weapons in its economic arsenal to inflict much economic pain to the US.

China can retaliate beyond instituting tariffs on U.S. goods.
    • China holds $1 trillion worth of U.S. treasury bonds. If it stops buying new bonds, or sells off its holdings, it would trigger a hike in yields that, beyond putting pressure on America's debt load, makes the US dollar even stronger
    • Devaluing the yuan by 8 percent could make tariffs moot, nullifying the effect of the US tariffs
    • The Chinese government could make it harder for U.S. companies to operate in China.
    • China can opt to isolate the US by
      • joining the TPP, accelerate the 21st century silk road project and beef up trade w the EU / Canada and Mexico

it's time for Traitor Trump to call of the tariff and declare victory !

Trump knows more about trade than any economist and he knows more about wars than any general, He can run the country by himself I am sure.
