Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, announced on Thursday that President Trump planned to declare a national emergency so he can bypass Congress and build his long-promised wall along the southwestern border.

That raised the prospect of a constitutional clash with lawmakers over who controls the federal purse.

Mr. McConnell said the president would take action after signing a bill to keep the government open but not fund his wall.

Smart move. Looks "strong" to his rabid base and Hannity.

Dumb wall gets hung up in court. Texans (I know) ain't giving up their land, or river access.
Waste of time, etc, but nobody will go check on the border to see if there's a wall or not.

Plus: the hubbub can keep clicks off the Mueller investigation a little longer. Before he needs to create another fake crisis.

Nice gesture because that **** won't make it past the courts before 2020

He can say he tried and that liberal judges wouldn't let him.

    The neutered President. How Sad.

He will blame the loss in court on others, and will use finish the wall as a 2020 slogan. This was what I saw happening since he acted like he would negotiate with the Dems.

I hope it holds up in court, so in 2020, we can nationalize the health care system to fight the opioid crisis, override the 2nd amendment to stop gun violence, and open the borders to fight declining birth rates. /s

    See how fun this is?

Oh Supreme court will think about that very much. Gonna be a case for the ages!

Oh and will Trump on this "National emergency" too? He had full control of the House and Senate two years ago and did nothing about it.

I hope yall are right that the courts can be relied upon. To me, it doesn't even matter if this move is ineffective. Declaring a BS emergency for something that is not an emergency just so you can get your policy preference is an abuse of the power of the office. I personally don't think it is enough to merely stop the order, he should be censured for even trying it in the first place.

the dotard is setting a precedence for future Dem POTUS to declare national emergency on
    • gun control
    • climate change
    • voter suppression
    • etc
this could happen as early 2021

I hope the next president has enough respect for the Constitution that he'd not try to usurp Congress' power.

Yeah right. Once the authority gets established...

I'm not sure what to think about whether the courts will strike this down.

Supreme court should not be able to rewrite the constitutions which is what they would be doing if they rule for the president. The separation of powers is clearly defined.

It will be funny to watch all the republican senators that have gone on record opposing the use of national emergency... including our own john cornhole:
