Was a nice finish. 1-0 against a team like that isn't a ton to celebrate...even on the road...but it's certainly better than the alternative.

Think the crowd will be 15 percent Dynamo...or is that too ambitious?

Either 1/3 or 50/50 crowd. It will be on the same level as Cowboys fans at Texans games, Spurs fans at Rockets games, and Red Sox fans or Yankees fans at Astros games.

    I'd guess 25% Dymano/75% Tigres.

3 goals, 3 points! 7 points from 3 home matches too. Nice start to the year, Dynamo!

All 3 home games, though. We don't know anything about this team until they hit the road. Nice to see Memo off to a good start, with his first career brace.

Agreed, but if they're going to be bad on the road again, they can't afford to drop too many points at home. The competition for minutes at the forward position is going to be fun to watch as the season progresses.

Just got tickets for their first road game in Colorado. We'll be sitting in the front row, just off from midfield.

You gotta think Elis will be moving to Europe at some point during the season, so the competition is good to watch. Memo making a really strong case to replace him

Fun game. A rapids fan called security on me for wearing an orange hat in a supposed supporters section. There were maybe 12 people in the whole section. So security “removed” us to seats on the field. They told us that guy has been a jackass all season

Great to get a road win and keep the good times rollin. I'm still not convinced this will last over the season but it's great to get off to such a good start. With the odds that we're going to lose Elis at some point this season doesn't help. But keep this going as long as they can and get into a solid playoff position. Then we'll see what happens. Maybe a successful season will spur ownership to spend a little...

    Nah.

Dynamo defeat Earthquakes, continue best start in club history

The Houston Dynamo celebrate a goal Houston Dynamo midfielder Tomas Martinez (10) against the Vancouver Whitecaps during the first half of a Major League Soccer match at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday, March 16, 2019, in Houston.

The Houston Dynamo are off to their best five-game league start in club history after a 2-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday.

"We were pushing the players, they responded very well," coach Wilmer Cabrera said. "In the second half it was a matter of being more organized, more disciplined with our tactics, with our shape. At any moment, we knew we had a chance."

Houston (4-0-1; 13 points) wasn't short of chances early.

Forwards Mauro Manotas and Alberth Elis nearly connected for a sixth-minute goal that was saved at close-range. Two minutes later, in a desperate defensive sequence, San Jose fended away a Manotas shot then repelled Marlon Hairston seconds later after Boniek Garcia made an acrobatic effort to retain possession along the end line.

Ten minutes into the game, Houston appeared to capitalize when Manotas received the ball in space and advanced it to Hairston, who angled his shot past goalkeeper Daniel Vega before being called offside.

A 70-minute weather delay, which extended the halftime intermission, seemed to supercharge both attacks.

Three minutes into the second half, Elis couldn't find Manotas in front of the goal for the go-ahead score.

But in the 52nd minute, Elis took possession then galloped down the right side of the field, dipping his inside shoulder to tilt his attack infield as Manotas drifted out wide to his right.

Elis passed the ball out to Manotas, who shipped it back in to a charging Elis, who'd looped his run in toward the top of the area before rifling the ball into the back of the net.

"He's growing, he's getting more mature," Cabrera said of Elis, who recorded his third score of the season. "On the first and almost every ball he received (in the past) he was trying to do one v. one. Today he has changed, he has adapted.

"He's improving his game and he's becoming more dangerous because when a player is unpredictable and changes the script every time, you become more difficult to mark."

The goal ties a personal milestone for Elis, who has now scored in three consecutive games for the second time in his career. He celebrated by pulling his shirt off and leading a cohort of teammates toward the crowd to strike a pose.

    But, the festivities were short-lived.

Four minutes after, play continued despite Elis getting chopped down by an Earthquakes (1-5-0; 3 points) player in the area. As players and fans came to terms with the no-call, San Jose transitioned its attack downfield and the ball eventually found its way to the foot of midfielder Jackson Yueill, who tied the game after ripping a long shot into the opposite corner of the net in the 55th minute.

"In my opinion the referee missed the penalty kick," Cabrera said.

Poised to continue the game's frenetic pace, Elis and Manotas continued to challenge San Jose's defense.

In the 60th minute, Elis made another foray into the area, this time from the right side.

He passed the ball to Manotas for a shot from the center of the box but it was blocked. Then, as Manotas ducked out of the way, midfielder Tomas Martinez fired the rebound into the back of the net to recapture the lead.

"We should've scored more goals but at the end it was good enough to come back and to bring another win at home," Cabrera said.

The Dynamo are currently riding a four-game winning streak, the team's first since 2012.

That success will be challenged in the coming weeks. Houston's next four opponents entered Saturday in the top five in their respective conferences (L.A. Galaxy, Columbus Crew, FC Dallas, Seattle Sounders).

"I don't think this is the best Houston Dynamo," Cabrera said. "We're going to see better rhythm with the ball and possession throughout the (season), but so far it's been very positive."

All right. They've got my attention. Let's see how they do against the better teams in the league but this is certainly a different team so far.
