I don't think that defending the first amendment or believing people shouldn't be silenced for expressing unpopular or even offensive views is a "conservative" position. I consider that liberal. Always have.

I wouldn't exactly call Lincoln an "example to be aspired to" unless you are referring strictly to his strong leadership during the Civil War. The whole " Great Emancipator" title is a tad exaggerated. There were some very practical reasons his administration changed course in regards to its slavery policy , namely to keep Britain out of the war and to keep the CSA from being recognized by European powers, and there is no evidence to suggest he viewed blacks as equal to himself.

There were certainly worse men in his time period however.
