Syria attack: John McCain says Trump's troops talk 'emboldened' Assad
Donovan Slack, USA TODAYPublished 6:04 p.m. ET April 8, 2018

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Sunday said President Trump’s talk about pulling U.S. troops out of Syria "emboldened" Bashar Assad to launch a suspected chemical weapons attack.

At least 42 people died and 500 were injured late Saturday in Douma, a suburb of Damascus, many of them while sheltering in basements during an artillery and bombing attack, rescue and medical workers told the Associated Press.

“President Trump last week signaled to the world that the United States would prematurely withdraw from Syria,” McCain said in a statement.

“Bashar Assad and his Russian and Iranian backers have heard him, and emboldened by American inaction, Assad has reportedly launched another chemical attack against innocent men, women and children, this time in Douma.”

The incident came less than a week after Trump, speaking about Syria, declared: "I want to bring our troops back home."

McCain praised Trump for condemning the attack Sunday on Twitter, but said, “The question now is whether he will do anything about it.”

The president, in tweets, ripped "that animal Assad" and lay blame for the Syrian president's power on Russia, Iran and even President Barack Obama. Obama warned in 2012 that Assad’s use of chemical weapons would cross a “red line,” but he didn’t back up the threat with military action.

McCain said, “History will render a bitter judgment on America for that failure. But no one should believe we are out of options.”

McCain hailed Trump’s “decisive action” last April, when he ordered a missile strike against Syria after more than 80 people died in a chemical weapons attack.

“He should do so again, and demonstrate that Assad will pay a price for his war crimes,” McCain said.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Sunday that the United States and eight other countries called for an emergency meeting Monday of the U.N. Security Council to discuss the situation.

"The Security Council has to come together and demand immediate access for first responders, support an independent investigation into what happened and hold accountable those responsible for this atrocious act,” she said.

Since trump just pulled out of a Latin America vacation, er, trip (sending his loyal vice puppy instead) in order to focus on a Syria response, you can be sure trump will bomb another empty airfield again in order to distract from the Mueller investigation...

Off-topic, but has there been any news on McCain's health?

I think McCain is partially right (and you can say the same about Obama's failure to back up his redline comments as well); but I also think there's little- if anything - we could have done to prevent a chemical attack. If you're unfamiliar with the Assad playbook; look up what his father did in Hama in the '80s. Extreme, visible displays of force are how the Assad family has stayed in power; which is especially important now that the government is increasingly relying on militias and foreigners to mantain control over areas of the country

I'm surprised more of the right isn't freaking out over Assad being the victor over what was once a pointless unending proxy war. Given its sheer pointlessness (oh right chemical weapons...UN what?) and it being potential powder keg for a deeper war between non-Syrian parties, it's good in principle that it's winding down, but it's bad, and this usually triggers the hawks, that the west has no ******* control over the outcome.

Another head scratcher is Putin and Erdogan hooking up after a deadly confrontation between their troops a couple of years ago. We're just going to ignore that and pretend NATO foreign policy is as solid and topnotch as the word of our commander in chief.

The strongmen smell weakness...from the cuck Democrat Left, obviously.

Eh I know plenty on the right who love Assad now. The same people who were pro-war in 2003 on the basis that Saddam was a butcher now support similar rule in Syria (nevermind that our support for dictatorships in the region is one of the major Arab greviances towards the US; but that's a different story).

Let's be honest. There's a huge difference between Assad and Saddam. Assad actually still has chemical weapons.

No he does not. Barack Obama negotiated an agreement with Russia to destroy all of Syria’s chemical weapons.

    Get your facts straight.

True but your pals, the Russians didn't fulfill their end of the bargain. Maybe Trump should hold them accountable for that too.

Who would have thought that after invading Ukraine, less than six months after this agreement, that Russia would not live up to their end of the agreement?

I don't know, maybe someone who thinks they shouldn't be held accountable for their espionage attacks on the United States.

Trump's troop talk inspired White helmets, who acted out a decent gas attacking story.

I don't care either way but you have to give Trump more than a year.

It's silly to blame this attack on him.

All that being said there is no reason for us to be there. I am all for helping people fight dictators but this a typical middle east country we don't understand

    Same ish different day

You don't care, so you decided to try and shift blame to Obama in an effort to throw criticism away from Trump, then when it's brought back to Trump, which is the topic at hand, you claim you don't care.

Of course you cared enough to post your blame Obama stuff in the first place.
