    AAAAAHHHH Skeet skeet skeet skeet

    http://blogs.chron.com/newswatch/2010/12/sugar_land_announces_name_of_n.html

Sugar Land announced the name of its new minor league baseball team today: The Skeeters.

Voting online and by mail, residents settled on the name over two others chosen as finalists from 8,000 submitted: the Sugar Land King Canes and the Sugar Land Lizard Kings.

Among those who originally submitted the name "Skeeters," Tony Johnson of Sugar Land was chosen at random and will receive lifetime season tickets.

The new team, which plans to build a stadium and hopes to be up and running by 2012, also announced today it's taking reservations for its first season tickets. Tickets for all 70 home games will go for $575 per seat, about $8 per game.

For more information go to www.SugarLandSkeeters.com, which the baseball organization says will be operational later today.

This is a recipe for disaster. I don't think most people know 'skeet' has multiple meanings.

I have a couple suggestions for mascots though.

Have a feeling this may be like our Houston 1836 soccer team...name change before the team starts playing.

Doubt it. The Houston 1836 was changed because a councilwoman (forgot her name) said that the name was offensive to Mexicans, even though the name was chosen to celebrate Houston's incorporation and independence from Mexico. It's like saying July 4th is offensive to Brits.

it really is. For many reasons.

    1) It's "red-neckish". "skeeters"...as in short for mosquitos...not good
    2) It implies that there are a lot of mosquitos around. While true, it's not something you want to think about that entices you to watch a 3 hour baseball game outdoors in the summer
    3) Among the under 35ish crowd, it's been made famous as referring to ejaculate, which is not exactly you want as your mascot.

    total fail

Why are all these team names making us sound like we are some backward hick town.

    Skeeters?

Uhhh, except the expected majority viewer demographic for a Houston soccer team would be Mexicans, so it would be kind of stupid to alienate the largest audience...

no, it's stupid to think that the name '1836' alienates anyone. find me a Mexican who's upset that Texas stole their 'independence' in 1836 so that they could join the US ten years later. Scarface's analogy is spot-on.

Sugar Land King Canes was so much better. And it actually speaks to the history of the area.
