It's almost like most people have no idea how statistics work.

538's polling aggregate gave trump a 29% chance of winning. Betting markets had him at 18%. The Times had him at 15%.

Trump won by a collective margin of 84K votes spread across 3 states.

If anything, the results show the polls overstated his chances.

That margin is super narrow. Like a coin flip landing on heads 5 times in a row.

What would have invalidated the polls would be a margin of victory that made his win look inevitable, not coincidental.

I'm honestly pretty happy with how the narrative is running through the brains of most conservatives and Trump acolytes for 2020.

They think a single election is enough to formulate trends. They think the Democrat candidates are clowns. They think the polls are wrong. Hundred of articles suggesting that Democrats only have "one way to win" in 2020 and they have to find the "perfect" candidate to barely squeeze by Trump.

All signs point to overconfidence and a disappointing voter turnout for Trump in 2020. I really hope Trump supporters maintain their bravado into the election.

And the most hilarious part is Trump is perfectly willing to shoot himself in the foot because of hubris by extravagantly claiming how it's going to be a landslide leading up to the election because you know.... He's a really dumb person.

While ostensibly about Harris, I think this piece is more revealing about the overall thinness of the Democratic field so far.

It’s hard not to be ambivalent about a cautious person, particularly a person who has been working for you but holding back, saving for the future. In truth, it’s hard not to feel ambivalent about all the candidates. There are so many contenders, more of them popping up like white-haired crocuses every day. One is too old. (Well, two are too old.) One’s too mean to her staff. One said she was Native American and she’s not. One Instagrammed his trip to the dentist. So many Americans have conflicting desires for this election. They want a transformative leader who will push this country forward. They want a rescue, a captain to steady our faltering ship of state and restore the rule of law. Most of all, they want a winner—whoever that is, just tell them, they’ll vote that way. They want a sure thing. They need a sure thing. And then they feel scared and frustrated by all the options, because that’s not how the system works.

Yeah, those have pretty consistently been the top three. There have been exceptions, especially in state polls, but Biden, Sanders and Harris are clearly the early favorites.

A focus group of one. My focus group of one tells me this: as uncertain as the Democrats look right now, once one candidate is chosen, it won't be that hard for Democrats and Independents to think of reasons why that person is a lot more presidential than they originally gave them credit for.

I am loving the rise of Pete Buttigieg! A weak, openly gay mayor with a thin resume is exactly the recipe for another electoral college route by President Donald J Trump.

Babylon Bee reports: "Scientists Recommend Reducing The Number Of Democratic Presidential Candidates To Help Fight Climate Change"

WORLD—Scientists have issued a dire warning: the current number of Democratic presidential candidates is simply unsustainable.

“No one ever thought this many people would run for president,” said climate scientist Dr. Raymond Hall, “and the planet just can’t take it. We’re talking each of them eating up resources vying for airtime, printing stickers with trite slogans, and flying from Iowa to New Hampshire. If they were actually all to be in one place for a debate, it would be an ecological disaster.”

Scientists recommend the current Democratic field be reduced to less than half the current number or we could see an increase in hurricanes, droughts, kaiju, and “other climate change things.” As for what to do with the excess candidates, researcher Jeannie Perry said, “As always, I’d recommend firing them into space. Barring that, someone should just sit down with them and explain to them that no one is ever going to vote for them and hope that keeps them from running around consuming resources in a futile effort for presidential power.”

Scientists also have recommendations for the average citizen so they can help. First off, they say to never ever say anything even slightly encouraging to a politician, as they always take that as an impetus to run for president. They also say under no circumstances should anyone give money to a candidate, because that only fuels their destructive behavior. Added Dr. Hall, “It would literally be nicer to the planet to dump a barrel of nuclear waste into the ocean.”
    Hard to argue with that.

AOC is too young to run, but she is a participant in this contest and she has a seat in the clown car, nevertheless.

this idea that the majority of voters will vote Trump because they are scared or turned of by SIX is gonna bite them hard.

it's the exact same thing as the Democrats only focusing on running against Trump.

Bernie Sanders has taken the lead in the most recent Emerson Poll:

Bernie Takes Lead for Democratic Nomination, Mayor Pete On The Move

A new national Emerson poll, including 20 Democratic candidates for President, found Senator Bernie Sanders ahead of the pack with 29%, followed by former Vice President Joe Biden at 24%. They were followed by Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 9%, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke and Senator Kamala Harris at 8%, and Senator Elizabeth Warren at 7%. Entrepreneur Andrew Yang and former HUD secretary Julian Castro were at 3%. The poll was conducted April 11-14 of Democratic Primary voters with a subset of n=356, +/- 5.2%.

Spencer Kimball, Director of Emerson Polling, said “while still early in the nominating process, it looks like Mayor Pete is the candidate capturing voters’ imagination; the numbers had him at 0% in mid-February, 3% in March and now at 9% in April.”

Kimball also noted that “Biden has seen his support drop. In February, he led Sanders 27% to 17%, and in March the two were tied at 26%. Now, Sanders has a 5 point lead, 29% to 24%.”

Meanwhile, support for Joe Biden is looking softer and Pete Buttigieg is apparently the big mover right now, as he moves into third place at 9%.
