Imagine watching your favorite football or basketball team, you crank the volume and all you hear is the sounds of the game. The hits, the players yelling, and the crowd...the glorious crowd. It would feel like you are there at the game.

All it would take is a simple toggle commentating ON/OFF option. Everyone is happy. I don't understand why this isn't already the standard.

I watch most games on mute so I don't really have any issue with commentators. But yes, less talk in general is a good thing.

    absolutely.
I love watching tennis and bball without commentating. Now that has a lot to do with the quality of commentators who are often blabbering about completely irrelevant stuff, mispronounce names, and are extremely partial and annoy me to no end. Especially lately when former players have become commentators it is hard to tolerate listening to them.
If there was a good commentator though he can elevate the viewing experience.

I usually watch the games on mute, rarely i'll watch it with sound(i do like some commentators).
I don't know if it plausible but the best thing in my opinion would be to have 2 different separate volume control options.
One for the commentary and one for the game noise(crowd, ball dribble, shoes squeak and etc).

I watch long stretches of games on mute, but I want the option of unmuting commentators at certain times.

Some commentary might be annoying, but for the most part, I think there is insight to be gained from the commentary. I prefer the commentary. A majority of last season's WCF was on mute though.

I still recall the Oilers game in the early 80's that had no TV announcers, it's was very weird...
