Congrats to MarGo. Spoiler Jeff Luhnow's first transaction. Traded Marco Duarte to the Boston Red Sox. Received Marwin Gonzalez.
Good for him. I'm sure that's not the type of deal he wanted, but I'm glad that he finally got A deal. That's a bargain price for the type of defensive value, clutch hitting and veteran experience he brings to a team.
Good bye sweet prince. Thanks for the memories, and thank you for providing one of the greatest moments in Astros history!
Oh Marwin... damn. I know we had no place left for him on our roster and I'm glad he's going to get some PT and some cash... Minnesota has a decent young club, too! But damn... that game 2 homer off Jansen, along with numerous other contributions (that arm in LF!!), make him an Astro for life. Thanks for the memories!!
Kind of unique that the two biggest feel-good moves that involve the Astros this off-season was Morton and Marwin both getting decent money deals elsewhere. Totally understandable given the bond that the 2017 team, and the key team members, will always have with this city and its fans.
Not a bad deal considering how the offseason has gone for 2nd and 3rd tier free agents. Marwin will always be a legendary Astro and now he doesn’t have to worry about the fans turning on him if he doesn’t end up being worth his free agent contract. He also shouldn’t ever have to worry about money, because $21M is a lot of ****ing dough. Here’s to him succeeding and getting one more multi year deal to finish his career.
I'll be rooting for MarGo unless he's playing us. On a side note didn't he have a long string of solo shots before his first HR with someone on base? If I remember right it was like 11.
Per Cot's, his salary was $2M in 2018. https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/al-west/houston-astros/
Not 2018. Cot's shows no salary for 2019 indicating his contract is over and Astros can pay him the minimum. Astros may pay him 2 million of they choose.
Per the CBA, the Astros could cut his salary by ***20% to $1.6M but I'd imagine they'll just renew him at 2M (Toronto was in the same situation last year and they chose to renew at his '17 salary, the last year of his original 4-yr deal he signed as a Cuban FA). ***ETA: after looking at the CBA, it's either 20% of last year's salary or 30% of his salary 2 seasons ago. So conceivably they could renew his contract at $1.4M bottom of page 13 here if anyone's interested: http://www.mlbplayers.com/pdf9/5450407.pdf
Thanks for that information. I wasn't aware of how that plays out when a player is making more than the minimum pre-abitration. So in updating my previous numbers it looks like Marwin is making 12 million in 2019 and Diaz will likely make somewhere between 1.4 million and about 2 million. That means Marwin is still 6 to 8.5 times the cost of Diaz this year. I also believe the acquisition of Brantley was another nail in the coffin for the Astros not bringing Marwin back. It made sense to me to bring Marwin back if he was going to be a backup plan to Kyle Tucker in LF. If Tucker works out then Marwin returns to his more super utility role instead of getting a large amount of time in LF.
Am I the only one whos more excited for the astros season then to watch the completion of the rockets season? thank god baseball is here
