"The NFL will not require players to be on the field for the national anthem in 2018. The media owned by the league is spinning this as a "compromise," but it's hardly that. As Judy Battista puts it, "If players are on sideline, will stand. But players may choose to stay in the locker room if they prefer not to stand." Her colleague at NFL Media, Ian Rapoport adds, "Respecting the anthem will be paramount if you’re on the sideline. Teams can also set their own policies. Compromise all around." Compromise for the league owners, maybe, but the players had zero say in this said "compromise." The owners are simply trying to keep the anthem "protesters" and "disrespecters" off the field for the song. It may not even work. If a player has strong feelings toward social injustice -- we assume they do if they're kneeling -- a fine may not be strong enough "punishment" to keep him off the field during the anthem."

    Beadle is spot-on.

This is the Barbra Streisand effect in play and the stupid owners don't know any better. They should have just shut up and moved on from this after writing a check for millions of dollars, but no they had to have the last word.

Now, this is going to be the leading story heading into the season for a 3rd straight time.

Mark Cuban was right. The NFL is destroying itself from within.

Since the whole kneeling protests started the NFL ratings are down. Part of it is some people are not watching because of the kneeling. Part of it is also the rules where every hit is a flag, and on the other side I know some people that stopped watching because they don't want to see people giving each other brain damage now that we know about CTE.

The owners care about the bottom line. They figured out that the rules to make the sport safer is still a net positive on income because the CTE lawsuits will cost them billions. What they don't seem to get is it doesn't matter which side they come down on with the protests. They are going to lose no matter what. Had they kept their mouth shut maybe it would have just gone away...... but no, now we have to hear about it for another year.

Making it an actual rule was smart, it helps them turn the page on this whole ridiculous nonsense.

Well the NFL just found a way to make this even more of an issue going forward and it was 100% by their own doing. On top of that, Bobby thinks this will put an end to it, so that means it will definitely continue to be an issue.

This new anthem policy will just cause the NFL's ratings and popularity to decline even more. The owners are just hurting themselves. The NFL is the Titanic.

Doubtful, if it keeps the few disrespectful players off the field then it puts the issue in the past and that'll go a long way towards boosting those ratings. Honestly if they passed this rule a long time ago it would have never been an issue to begin with.

    This.

The fake NFL patriotism was already exposed when the military was caught paying them to show all the ceremonial stuff.

It was a recruiting tool for the military and the NFL's dumb fan base still buys into this fakeness.

Sure, but I think you can imagine how *that* conversation would have gone down.
